I have managed to get a booking at Skukuza for ten nights in August. Hopefully we will be able to go - if not I will cancel and try September.

However I have heard very mixed reviews about camping at Skukuza - from very positive to very negative. I figure that with our borders being closed there shouldn’t be too many international tourists there, so that shouldn’t be a problem. I also don’t think that shade should be a big problem in August, so am pretty optimistic that it should be nice there.

The main thing will be to get a reasonably level site. I am aware that the ground is hard. Very hard!

Does anyone have any particular recommendations regarding Skukuza. I have stayed there, but have not camped there. My only complaint has been the hoards of tourists, which as mentioned will hopefully not be a problem.

I will appreciate any advice.

In my opinion Skukuza's camp site is not bad (according to Kruger Park standards). However, I do not like the area. Too busy for my taste. But nothing wrong with the camp.

Most probably, as you mention, it will not be as busy as normal during your intended visit.

We have camped there on a number of occasions. The area has a lot of game and lots of roads to drive on. The drive down to Lower Sabie is always rewarding.

The camping area is mostly terrased as it is in a valley. Some stands are not very level but spacious enough. The sites are mostly not along the fence. It is still very pleasant to camp there.

Skukuza is by far the largest camp in the park and has all the amenities of a small town. Thus it can get very busy. As it is close to the main airport a lot of overseas tourists visit the camp (now not so).

It is not my favourite camp but I still prefer it to some of the other south western camps. We have booked for Skukuza for 3 days in September and for 5 days in November.

By looking at the availability during the time of your stay you can get a good idea about how busy it is going to be. During the period I am staying there of the 55 camp sites between 4 and 25 are available.......it is going to be busy in the camping area. Most of the bungalows/chalets are open. So the area will be quiet.

Leads me to another observation, people are scared to occupy a bungalow or chalet, but camping in their own accomodation/space is acceptable. Caravan/camper/RV's are going to sell well!!

Camped there for 2 weeks last November. The campsite was not overrun. The layout of the camping area is varied, we had a reasonably private spot. The roads were not that busy either. Most stands on the North side looked levelish.

Nice to be close but not on top of all the facilities at Skukuza.

A camper to the side of us camps there for a couple of weeks every year on their way back from Die Eiland.

Overall ok, will camp there again.

As jy in die kampeer area is, kom jy nie agter daars baie mense nie....net die kampeerders en tenthuis bewoners kom in daai area. Dis gewoonlik ook net buite die hekke baie besig,  maar verkeer dun gou uit soos paaie oral in omgewing vertak. Dis die enigste kamp waar ons al was waar ons in die aande leeus hoor brul het. Daai kampeer terein het lekker atmosfeer....gaan en geniet!

Kamp gerus hier.  Ons begin altyd by Tsendze, Satara en dan Skukuza. So dek jy die hele park.  In elk geval slaap jy net daar.  Ablusies by al die kampe skoon, so ook die opwasplekke. Maar ja, die grond hier is kliphard.

Daar is nie 'n kamp in die Kruger Wildtuin waarvan ek nie hou om by te kamp nie.  Ek verkies ook nie noodwendig een kamp bo 'n ander nie, maar ek probeer elke keer om my maandlange besoek oor die hele Kruger Wildtuin-gebied te versprei, van noord na suid.

Skukuza is een van die kampe waar ons al male sonder tal heerlik gekamp het  -  veral in die Julie 2017 skoolvakansie toe ek die voorreg gehad het om vir 12 dae saam met my drie kinders en hul gesinne (elkeen in hul eie karavaan) daar te kamp.  Omdat soiets nie maklik gereel kan word nie (ons almal woon in Kaapstad), sal dit een van my beste Wildtuin-herinneringe wees.

Gaan kamp gerus in Skukuza, julle sal dit geniet !
