My powertouch remote battery needs to be replaced. I tried 2 brand new Duracell batteries, the remote does not switch on. In the end I used the umbilical cord to move the caravan.   Has anyone of the forum members replaced this battery? The manual says replace with 9V DC PP3 battery. The new Duracell battery measures 9.6V.  The original battery is a Varta Industrial .Maybe i need an industrial 9V battery?

I think your remote is kaput. Just make 100% sure the polarity is correct. 9V pp3 batteries are either sinc carbon or alkaline. That only makes a difference in longer life.

If you are technical enough you could open it and check for a fault, else take it to their fitment centre to test.

Do you know the warranty on the powertouch in SA? . In the Uk this is 5 years. My mover was installed less than 3 years ago. I will phone the importer in Villiers. What I can't understand is with the old battery the remote switches on immediately and then dies., with the new battery the remote does nothing, it is not a contact problem. I will find out what a new one costs and what the importer says about warranty. .

Check the new battery with a Volt meter. I think that it is old stock that you bought and that it is already flat more so than that of the old battery.

If possible buy the Light blue Everready Industrial battery. Stronger, lasts longer than even the duracell ones.

I have been in contact with Leon of Powertouch. Leon says the new battery is dead. But that battery measures 9.3V and i even tried a second new Duracell battery. Leon, I agree with you especially after this: I managed to increase the voltage on the old battery to 7.5V and the remote switches on and works.

There again where can you buy it? The Duracell i bought is 9V 6LF22, Alkaline MN1604, this is the battery the manual says you should buy.  I will try to find the Everready battery.

Frans, you had me worried. I opened my 18 months old PowrTouch's remote and found it also has the Varta 9V battery with 8.7V power left. After installation, the installer recommended I buy a replacement battery and keep it in the caravan in case of need. I then purchased a 9V Energizer battery and tested it today : 9.7V still available.  I installed the Energizer battery in the remote and it works perfectly.

I am therefore not sure what causes your problem.  Are you sure that the fixed (+) and (-) contacts in the remote have not been damaged in any way so that it cannot accept the terminals of a new battery ?

Frans, having 9.2 volts does not nesesarily mean the battery has capacity. Measure the current it can deliver. Buy a new fresh battery and I think your problem will be solved.

The problem is not solved. The remote does not switch on with a brand new Energizer battery. The Energizer battery measures 9.67V.

The original Varta battery measures only 6.78v and the remote switches on without a problem. This battery wil not last much longer.

I realy can not think of something else that could be wrong. If the remote operates with a lower voltage battery then it should operate with a proper fully charged battery.

Doing a bit of fault finding in my mind I can only come up with the following:

1. Are the two batteries the same size. Do they fit in the battery holder exactly the same, what I am looking for is there a possibility that the battery compartment could hinder the points from making contact on the new battery.
2. I have checked on the NET that the poles on the two types of batteries polarity is the same, so it cannot be that.
3. Look in the manual of the mover if there is anything about to high voltage of the remote battery.
4. Only other thing I can think is connect a 12V globe to the new battery and drain the voltage to exactly 9V or a nip below.

Last resort is to call Villiers and ask advice.

How old is the mover. Mine is not even a year old. Maybe I should change the battery just to check if we get a similar problem.
