Best Camp sites in Mozambique.
Hi, We are wanting to experience camping in Mozambique Mid Jan to end Jan 2015. Can anyone recommend a campsite in either Bilene, Xai Xai , or Inhambane. We don't mind a few luxuries but these are hard to find in Moz campsites I would imagine. We will be a group of four adults(retired) and are looking for a camp close to the beach and close to supplies like fruit and veg. Also, hoping to find a campsite which has a fair amount of shade, elec power, hot showers and reasonable/good ablutions. We will be towing a off road trailer (fully loaded) with a Hilux 4x2 bakkie with diff lock, so roads need to be accessible. I realise that, that you cannot guarantee road conditions and will not hold you responsible, not to worry.
Many thanks, in anticipation.

How great is our GOD
Check Zavora Lodge website. There are campsites on top of the dune that have great views and more protected ones behind the dune. Last there in July 2011. Time to go again.
We stayed at Montegos (Pirate) Camp on the beachfront just outside Xai Xai. We had some issues as we were not told at the time that it was still being built!! However, the location was spectacular and I am sure it would be very nice by now. The campsite itself is on terraces going up a dune but with loads of shade, and consequently no grass. There was a lodge 100m down the beach that served amazing meals for next-to-nothing (Zonguene??).
There was a few hours power provided daily from an old single piston engine located at the edge of the park, and hot water was from a wood-fired donkey boiler. May have been upgraded by now.
In a 4x2 you would need to be careful with your tyre pressure, as the 'road' to the beachfront resorts is basically a sand track through the vegetation at the top of the beach. This was 6 or so years ago though.
There is a campsite at the edge of town that looked municipal, and was pretty busy, but I was happy to avoid it as it had an endless stream of hawkers through it.
An acquaitance that frequently visits MOZ always stay South of Maputo and travels thru KZN to get there. If you are not in a convoy of vehicles beware. There are road blocks that target the unsuspecting single SA vehicle.
And make VERY sure you have 2x warning trianges, not just one!!!
Was 3jr terug by Montegos, so 3km sand pad anderkant Xai Xai, jul voertuig sal dit maak met die boswa, het by Esparanda ook gekamp daai pad bly weg met die voertuig jy het n 4x4 nodig.
Geniet.
Ons het nog nooit in Maputu omgewing gekamp nie.....hou van kamp in suide by Ponta de Ouro
Het saam met Jin by Esparanca do Mar gekamp. Baie lekker plekkie. Naby aan hom is Tan 'n Bietjie maar beide van die oorde het jy 'n 4x4 nodig.
Probeer Praia do Bilene. Reg by die Bilene meer. Baie skaduwee.
A friend of minehas just come back from Moz, they went diving on Inhaca island, they had a very bad experience. both the lodge owner and the government officials where they tried to get spear fishing lisences led them round the bush. Whenthey wanted to come back, they were all 4 arrested and all there gear was impounded, boat wet sutes spear guns everything. Firstly they were given a standard fine, when they wanted to pay this, the fun started eventually they got out. But be very aware of there rules and regs. Dont do things without the relavant permits.

Hi Everyone,
Many thanks for all your responses, much appreciated. Sorry, I never realised that people had responded and only noticed this to night. Anyway we have decided to rather hire a Cottage at Tofhino seeing that it will be January and camping could be a bit dicey. We managed to get Casa Isabel at more less the same price as it would be for camping at Zongoene in Xai Xai which I believe is fantastic. Also, we are going to look around and make notes for future camping trips. But these will be in the months of April/May which I believe are the best months. Please comment and advise, all advise is welcome.
