The oldest camp in South Africa and more than 300 years later still THE BEST This site formed part of one of the oldest out spans in South Africa dating from the 17th century. For about two centuries this outcrop was the only suitable out span near Cape Town along this highway across the sand dunes of the Cape flats to the interior. It lost its importance only after c. 1849 when a hard surface road was constructed.
