Bordering Gauteng and the Northern Free State is the Vaal Dam, over 300 square kilometres, it offers visitors boundless opportunities from fishing, canoeing, sailing and river cruises to relaxing family picnics on the banks of the river. Near the small town of Vredefort is the Vredefort Dome, one of the oldest and largest meteorite impact structures in the world and is over 90 km wide and 20 km deep, this impact created a mountain range in an otherwise flat landscape.
