KAMBATI 21st-24th March 2019
The Browns set off for Kam’bati at about 1.45pm on Wednesday and were expecting a 3-hour drive to get there. The going was good until we arrived at a stop/go on the road outside of Robertson near the Skurwekop turnoff. Wayne was already in the queue having arrived about 15 minutes ahead of us. We waited another 20 or so minutes before the traffic started moving ahead of us. We got to Bonnievale after a slowish drive passing another stop/go just after the circle outside of Robertson. Here the way ahead was guess work for me, as I had never travelled on the road. More road works and a bumpy road kept the pace slow. Wayne was now behind me after making an earlier turn on the right road, which would have taken us directly to the N2. Anyway we ended up going via Swellendam that probably added another 25km to the journey.
The turnoff to Kam’bati was easy to find and well sign posted. We travelled along the dirt road for about 5km before arriving at reception at about 5.45 pm. We soon arrived at our designated site and joined Lesley and Marieta and Nicky and Dennis who were already set up. We were located on the grassy banks high above the river facing well-established gum trees with the brown wide waters of the Riviersonderend sluggishly flowing toward a rocky embankment and sort of spillway to our right.
We were soon set up with bubbles on the go and joined Nicky and Dennis at their van for drinks and to braai later. The evening was calm and not too cold and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing after the long drive. It was interesting to observe the evidence of the recent heavy rains experienced in the area and it could be seen that the river had risen about 2 meters overflowing it’s lower banks in places.
Thursday arrived with good weather and Wayne and I took a trip into Swellendam for extra provisions. In the full light of day one could see the extent of the park with upper terraces overlooking the distant mountains, a lower new level which was empty, children’s play area, putt-putt, swimming pool, covered games room, pub and conference facilities, lower riverbank sites and then the area where we were located at the end of the park. The evening was again calm with little wind and we made a chicken curry pot and the others braai’ed.
Friday saw the arrival of more campers and Vanessa in the evening after her long trip directly from work. She had to navigate in the dark, which was stressful for her, and Wayne gave directions from time to time to ease the way. Nicky and Dennis and Les and Marieta were kept busy during the day catching up with family who were also at Kam’bati for the weekend. Saturday was again a lovely sunny day and we accompanied Wayne and Vanessa for a visit to Swellendam, the local Spar and out to look at a Time Share location that W&V were hoping to spend time at in July.
Sunday saw a change in the weather, which was very overcast and misty. As we were all planning to leave at around 11am we had Indaba at 1030. The next outspan is Klipkrans 26, 27 & 28 April and then Koningskop 24, 25 & 26 May. Deposits are required so please settle with Angela if not already paid.
All in all a well maintained park with modern facilities and well worth a visit.
