Mabibi Beach Camp - Quest to Kosi Bay

Our first campsite that we stayed at on the Quest to Kosi Bay was Mabibi Beach Camp near Lake Sibaya on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. The best way to describe Mabibi Beach Camp is that it is a "Bush" campsite. It has all you really need for any rustic bush campsite, plenty of space in each shady campsite to park your vehicle and set up your camping equipment, a built in braai area, and a tap, with no electricity and an ablution block nearby. What more do you actually need when breaking away from our hectic lives?

There is no cell phone reception inside the campsite and if you really needed contact with the outside world you have to walk 300m to a spot high enough that gets reception. Who really needs a cell phone when you have the complete peace and quiet of separate camping sites that are surrounded by bush and really make you feel that you are all alone in the middle of nowhere.

You will find the walk to the beach can be a beautiful trip down the wooden stairs, but can take your breath on the way back up after a few hours spent snorkelling at Hulley Point. The snorkelling is one of the best attractions of this campsite with low tide revealing the amazing rock sheltered areas that allow you to snorkel in peace and view all the abundance of sea life.

Half the adventure of Mabibi Beach Camp is the trip there through 4x4 beach sand roads and we were lucky enough to have been provided a Land Rover 110 Defender TD5 by 4WD Expeditions that handled the roads perfectly. You will find the roads fun to drive on and you can do some exploring without real fear of getting lost as they all seem to meet up again at some point or other.

The other main attraction in the area is Lake Sibaya, which is the largest fresh water lake in South Africa, and you can find hippos, crocodiles, small buck, flamingos and other bird life in the area. With some really beautiful places to stop at the lake you can turn it into a day trip and have a lunch while overlooking the lake and its breath-taking views.

The staff at Mabibi Beach Camp were also very friendly and making the booking was easy with Michell sorting it all out for us.

Overall if you are looking for a place to completely breakaway from civilization and get away from it all then Mabibi Beach Camp is the place to go!

Till we visit again!
