Kosi Bay Casitas - Quest to Kosi Bay
Our second campsite that we stayed at on the Quest to Kosi Bay was Kosi Bay Casitas in Kosi Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. Kosi Bay Casitas is a perfect base camp if you want to explore Kosi Bay. It has spacious clearly marked campsites with water, electricity and shade as well as self-catering casitas and a backpackers lodge to cater for all types of people, but you do still need a 4x4 to explore the area.
At Kosi Bay Casitas there is a pool area for relaxing on those hot days and there is a bar and restaurant with Thomas the barman/chef who made really good food and was a pleasure to chat to giving us some good laughs while we were there. Although it is not a bush camp the area surrounding the campsite still gives you a bush feeling.
One of our main attractions that we went to was the Kosi Mouth estuary where you have some stunning views driving down to it overlooking Kosi Lake one with all its fish traps. At the estuary itself you can cross through in knee high to waist high water or you can pay the locals to pull you across in their little boat. Which then leads you to the coral reef in the estuary itself from which snorkelling provides the best views of all the fish life. You can also spend a day at the beach there which is just a few kilometres away from the Mozambique border.
The other big attraction that we took part in is the boat ride on the Kosi Lakes. The boat ride gives you the chance to see the lakes and channels connecting the lakes up close, with a large variety of fish life in the lakes as well as hippos, crocodiles and plenty of bird life to add to the beautiful views of the lakes themselves. It also allows you to get quite close to the fish traps that have been a tradition for the local people for more than 600 years.
There are other attractions and activates in the area which we just did not have enough time to do them all and these include, Turtle Tours
Dolphin Swims, Fish Trap Tours, Birding Tours, Tembe Elephant Reserve Game Drive, Surfing, Kayak Trip, Scuba Diving and Zulu Cultural Tour so you will always have something to do.
The staff at Kosi Bay Casitas were very friendly and Tanya made the booking process very easy as well as going through the effort to arrange the Kosi Lake boat trip because their own boat was currently being serviced.
Overall if you are looking to explore Kosi Bay and the surrounding areas then this makes a great base camp with everything you need.
Till we visit again!
