My hubbie and I and three teenage kids are planning a motorhome trip for 2-3 weeks from Jburg to Kruger down to cape town via Durban next July/Aug. We have done motorhome trips before and the two of us travelled in SA many years ago. I am having difficulty working out how easy it is to camp and what campsites are available. Do they have hook ups? etc. Any advice if this is doable and any great places to stay would be really welcome. Are there enough campsites so you don't have to travel big distances in a day? We plan to camp at Kruger inside the park - which is the best one for a motorhome? Do they have hookups? What is security and facilities like. Lots of questions but thought all you experienced motorhome travellers may have some answers. Many thanks in advance. We are a british family living in the US. Best wishes

Pip, welcome to the forum. There are many wonderful sites to stay at during your trip between the Kruger Park and Cape Town via Durban but there are alternatives to the coastal route which you could enjoy too. 

As for the Kruger Park sites I've not been there in a few years, however I'm sure there will be plenty of feedback from fellow members. 

A for hookups I assume that you mean electricity - there should not be a problem there. We don't have sites in SA where you hookup the black water systems as you probably have in the US. The ablution facilities are pretty good at the privately owned sites and even some of the Municipal ones as well.

Security should not be a problem just don't leave any valuables like laptops and phones lying around.

Once you have a basic plan of which resorts you would like to stay at pop questions about them here and members will give you updates and the facilities and conditions of the resorts.

Oh that map certainly does not have all the sites on it but once you have a basic plan we may be able to provide alternatives for you to consider.

Welcome. I would say the trip you are planning, you need more time than just 2-3 weeks. All the camps in KNP are nice and safe. Maybe you can start from north of KNP and move south, visit a couple of camps for 1 or 2 nights each....but that will already be at least 10 days. 

For the first 15 days of July you are going to struggle to get camping sites as it is winter school holidays in SA and is the most popular time of the year to visit KNP

If you go straight from Johannesburg to Skukuza in KNP its 455km

Straight from Skukuza to Durban its 798km

Straight from Durban to Cape town its 1637km

Straight from Cape Town to Johannesburg its 1399km

Total 4289km, but that is the shortest route, not the most beautiful route. If your planning for 2 weeks, the average kilometers you need to do is more than 300km a day....personally I think its to much. On these shortest routes you are going to miss the most beautifully nature scenes....if you want to include that, you going to end up at at least 400km a day

I plan all my trips "My Google Maps" I also save the resort information with pictures related to the resort on the same Map. You can have several layers with different info ie resorts visited ; resorts wanting to visit ; no go resorts etc. switch the layers on & off as required.

To try and do it all in only three weeks is going to not be a good idea!

Keep in mind that the time of the year, you are planning, is good for the Kruger, but not for the Western Cape(Cape Town) because it would then be cold and rainy.

I recommend that you'd rather focus on the Kruger and other camping sites and the scenery in the northern part of the country, and come back for a separate tour to the Western Cape during November or March of another year...

If you would try to do all of it in such a short span of time, you are going to spoil what could have been a lovely experience. Remember: the Garden Route in itself, in the Western Cape, is so beautiful and I could recommend such lovely campsites, but for which you would need time.

We regularly tour the Western Cape and has to drive at 50kph so as not to miss out on anything - which we indeed do safely by letting the other traveller go flying by.
