Transkei road condition.
Have heard there is road works between Mthatha and kokstad R102, have also heard of road closures and detours on this road, anyone travelled this way recently .
Looking for a first report on this road as we will be towing this way from East London to kokstad in the next 2 weeks.
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
My hard cover printed map still shows the road between Mthatha and Kokstad as the N2, however google maps now show it as the R102.

George, the hair on my head stands up when ever I hear of someone wanting to travel through Mthatha. We have done that and got the T shirt and never again especially with the van behind us. Our last trip from Mount Currie to East London was via Ugie and Elliot then down to East London and that route was quite an adventure as well. We slept over at Intaba Lodge just outside Elliot on the Barkley East road before the pass. this was in 2015. Hopefully someone has updated info for you.
After Intaba lodge we spent two nights at Rendezvous Caravan Park close to Cintsa West before going to Green Fountain. The first photos are from Intaba Lodge and the last three from Rendezvous.
Brian we going to pass through Mthatha on a Sunday morning around 8 am, have travelled this route twice about 5 years ago also on a Sunday ,
Guess more concerned about the road works and road condition on that N2.

I would be more worried about the hijackings taking place on the N2 between Gquebertha and Mthatha. Mybroadband has an article on this today. Just travel safe and be aware.

We want to travel through the Transkei on Sunday to Durban,
Please can someone let us know how the roads are and if it's wise ?? Otherwise we have to go through Bloemfontein/Jhb etc
Going through Mthatha on a Sunday morning early is the best time, only issue we had is the road between Mthatha and kokstad is under construction therefor it is slow with stop and goes and endless kms of speed humps, Not all the way to kokstad but a lengthy stretch never the less.
