Towing vehicle question
Rated to tow up to 3500kg braked
Weight 2389kg tow vehicle.
Does this equate to 1,111kg payload?
243kW
700Nm-¹
Piet
Daai
Does this equate to 1,111kg payload? no
243kW jy slaan vinnig [versnelling hulp]
700Nm-¹ jy slaan hard [sleep bystand krag]
I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Hi Pieter.

The maximum tow weight (3500Kg) is wat the manufacturer allows. Some don't allow towing at all.
According to my understanding the SA law states:
Die Tarra of the towing vehicle must be equal to or more than the GVM of the trailer.
A trailer of GVM 750Kg or less does not require brakes on the trailer and you don't need an "EB" rating on your license. A "B" rating is good enough.
A trailer with a GVM of 750Kg or higher requires over run brakes to be fitted to the trailer and the driver must have an "EB" rating on his license.
If the trailer GVM is higher than the towing vehicle Tarra then active electric or hydraulic brakes must be fitted to the trailer.
Payload is equal to trailer GVM minus trailer Tarra.
Is this correct?
Groete,
Paul
Paul, you are correct. In South Africa the Road Traffic Regulations are more stringent than in eg Australia. Our local manufacturers and or suppliers of vehicles overstate the maximum towing capability. They plainly ignore our local Regs. If any dealer tells a buyer that the vehicle can tow 3500kg, then some of us know the dealer has no clue of the RSA Regs.
At the caravan show in Midrand earlier this year there were vans on display that can only be towed by a Land Cruiser or similar sized SUV. The sellers admitted as much and stated that Ranger or Hilux bakkies may not tow it unless those service brakes you mention above are fitted to the van and the activating coupling to the tow vehicle fitted.
An easy example is that the Tare of the towing vehicle must be at least 1500kg if you wish to tow a GVM 750kg trailer.
If any reader wantd to know more, I suggest you read the Traffic Regs.
Regards
Dis interessant Theo.
Fred, the Reg (Reg 151) that applies to the Tare vs GVM of towing vehicle to Trailer/caravan is mostly overlooked as it specifies the brakes that are required in whatever situation. The "treintjie slepers" ie those fellows that tow a trailer behind their caravans, mostly ignore this Reg. Next time you see an Exclusive with a trailer in tow behind a Hilux / Ranger / Amarok etc , check the brakes. The trailer probably does not even have run-in brakes. Sub-Reg 'b' and 'c' are very clear as to the type of brakes be it a parking, overrun or/and service brake that is required
I have attached a jpg file and I hope it is readable.
