Has anyone driven Sani pass , how challenging is the pass, any advice , tips, recommendations ?

My skoonseun en dy gesin het die pas seker so n jaar gelede gery en hulle het nie gedink dis moeilik nie. Dit was met n 2 liter Amorak 4X4 maar skoonseun is nie n geharde 4X4 man nie. Dit was toe nie geteer nie.

I went up Sani Pass in December last year with my Subaru XV after the heavy rains (once the sun finally came out) and although there were about 3 sections with wash away that caused it to be more rocky and technical than I expected, the route overall was not an issue. There are some steep gradients by the switchbacks at the top of the pass, and depending on the wash away at the time, might need you to choose some better angles on the corners themselves. Having the downhill descent control on the way back down made it much easier, however if you just let the vehicle crawl in low range down those really steep sections you will also be fine.

It is weather dependent and obviously is more dangerous in bad weather or when there is ice, but overall its a beautiful pass that I think anyone with a capable vehicle should be able to do. So, if you are going up in a 4x4 with low range then there wont be any problems for you.

Personally the only pain on the route are the taxi's that have no respect or concern for safety and try to overtake you in really sketchy sections or otherwise ride on your backside until you find a gap to pull over.

The Triton will be more than capable, so go for it and enjoy the drive and the view!

Remember that it is a border crossing so passport is required and take cash with you as there are toll fees that need to be paid at the Lesotho border.

Would you know how much the toll fees are ?
