I am driving home from Cape Town along Route 62, keeping an eye open for potential campsites for a future caravanning trip along this scenic part of the country. I last year stayed at Warmwaterberg Spa ( or whatever it is called) opposite Ronnie’s Sex Shop near Barrydale and was not at all impressed...both with Ronnie’s and with Warmwaterberg Spa. This morning I had a look at the camp site at Calitzdorp Railway Station. Now that is a dump if ever I have seen one. Maybe Oudtshoorn has something better to offer...So far I am pretty disappointed and haven’t seen any camp sites to lure me and my caravan to this beautiful part of our country.

Sad to hear of the deterioration of rural and municipal camping sites. It could so easily be changed in money spinners if managed properly. They should also consider privatization. 

Kleinplasie in Oudtshoorn is super.  It is full of shady trees and the ablutions are top notch. There are also a camp site below the Swartberg quite near the Cango caves.  I believe it is quite good but not always open.  I have forgotten the name but from what you can see from the road, it looks very inviting.

You should also have a look at Towerkraaltjie.  It is about 10 k's west of Ladismith on a farm.  It only has about ten very level grassed sited, all with electricity.  The ablutions are super and the farm owner a delight.  He runs the camping site more as a hobby than as a commercial venture as he likes people and his community.  The views are spectacular and you feel cut off from the world.  There is a nuts packing factory near his farm where you can buy freshly harvested nuts.

I agree, Warmwaterberg is a bit basic, especially the ablutions,  but we quite enjoyed the atmosphere and the restfullness.

The two camping sites in Oudtshoorn that I can comfortably recommend are Kleinplasie as previously mentioned and then on the way towards Cango Caves there's an awesome place called Oppi Dam.  Another private and nice camping spot between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn is a farm called Kruisrivier but it's a dirt road from the R62 although in good condition maybe not for a road caravan

Three years ago we did Route 62 and stayed at Klein plasie it was clean and pleasant camping there. From there we stayed on farm on the way to the warm baths near Calitzdorp very nice can't remember the name. We also stayed at Guano caves near Montaque it was very clean. Some camp sites are deteriorating fast and are not save at all.

My few cents on Route 62

We went on a roundabout tour in 2018 February and found a caravan sleep over at De  Rust across from a shop just before you go out the town.

That was a piece of heaven and there is a wine and other on the premises it is on the left hand side of the road. The entrance is next to this winery and the owner is just next door to the site. The ablutions are very clean and the service is very good. We stayed over at the Sunrise or something like that. The shop has a bar and restaurant in one it is  called Herries in the Klein karoo on the right hand side of the road. Price is low and level grass area with a beautiful sunset. Try it and see what you think only thing is you must go down the huis pass to get there from Oudshorn side or from Beaufort West  through the Gorge with the many bridges over the river running through there. It is something to behold.

Just my few cents and worth it to see.

Thank you Richard, we did camp there, at Karoowater, during March. Now we're looking for places around Seweweekspoort...

Montagu Karavaanpark is puik. Ons het heerlik daar gekuier in Februarie. 

So 'n paar kilos buite Montagu in 'n oostelike rigting op die R62 is daar nog 'n gawe karavaanpark, Guano Caves.  Ons het nog nie self daar gekamper nie maar wel gaan kyk en dit lyk puik.  My broer het pas daar gekampeer vir 'n week en hy bevestig my siening. 

Ons het al verskeie kere by Montagu karavaanpark gestaan en meen dis een van die beste versorgdes in die land.  Daar is twee onderdak warm swembaddens.

Die Montaque woonwapark in die dorp is regtig puik.

Daar is ook baie om te doen in die omgewing.

Daar is 'n Protea Plaas buite die dorp wat 'n trekker roete aanbied tot bo op die berg wat jou in staat stel on vanaf die verlede, die hede en die toekoms te sien in 'n 360 grade view. Weet nie of hulle net in Protea tyd opereer nie, maar moert dan nie die ete aan die einde van die trip mis nie.

Ons is vanaf Vrydagaand vir 3 aande in Montagu Woonwapark. Ons was by twee vorige geleenthede daar vir 'n naweek, maar dit was etlike jare gelede. Toe was dit 'n baie lekker en netjiese oord. Die eerste keer was in die appelkoostyd. Die vrugte het afgeval en in die spasie tussen die windskerm en die enjinkap gaan lê. Ek sien op hulle besprekingsbevestiging dat jy nie vrugte mag pluk nie. Maar daardie vrugte het self afgeval op my bakkie en het vreklekker geproe. Hierdie keer is ons 'n bietjie vroeg vir appelkoostyd.

Daarvandaan is dit eerskomende Maandag vir 7 aande na Dibiki by Hartenbos. Dit sal 'n eerste vir ons wees.

Ja we have been a few times to Montague Caravan park - you cannot go wrong camping there. Facilities are very good. The tractor trailer trip up the mountain was awesome as well as the lunch afterwards, really worth the effort.

Ons het gistermiddag hier by Montagu Woonwapark aangekom. Die park is propvol vir die naweek. 10 uit 10 vir die netjies versorgde park. Net een aspek pla, naamlik die "unisex" ablusies - ons hou nie daarvan nie en dit is waarskynlik die enigste ding wat sal verhoed dat ons weer hierdie mooi park sal besoek.
