Good Morning We are new campers and will be travelling to Letaba soon. Please advise as to the best route (road conditions) to travel from Pretoria to Phalaborwa Gate.  We do not have a 4x4 caravan. Please also recommend a camping site on route to Phalaborwa. Thank you

Pietersburg, Tzaneen, Gravalotte, Phalaborwa 

Linda, we live in Pretoria.   Our route to Phalaborwa is via Polokwane (Pietersburg), Magoebaskloof, Gravelotte to Phalaborwa.  You can reach Letaba in one day from Pretoria. 

If you feel you need to overnight then there is Magoebaskloof Mountain lodge that has caravan sites - these are suited for mid size and smaller vans.  If you Google them, they do not mention the van sites but they are there and we have stopped over there.  An Exclusive size will be problematic.  Last year we parked the van and slept in a chalet.  They serve great dinners.   Breakfast was included in the room rate.

At Phalaborwa there is a Forever Resort (Phalabora safari park) on the right hand side less than a kilometer before the entrance gate to KNP.   We have frequently stayed there before entering KNP the next day for the 50km stretch to Letaba.  Just note that if you enter early morning the sun is in your face as you are driving East.

Just another point.   In Letaba the fence is a great attraction as it is patrolled by Hyenas and the odd mongoose.   There is a sewage outfall just outside the fence near the middle ablution block. If the camp is full, then the middle ablutions is also the facility used by the tourist camper busses that park near it.   This can lead to overflow drains.   It is also compounded by the leaves that fall into the open water points and add to the blockage. The laundromat uses R5 coins - take R100 with.     

Do not take the St Georges road route from Haenertsburg to Tzaneen.  It has lumber trucks.  Use Magoebaskloof.

Jip...ons het ook daai oorloop dreine ervaar by Letaba....my grootste rede dat ek nie weer gou daar sal wil bly nie. Nie lekker om te braai en eet met n oorheersende stink drein reuk nie....bo op dit gevolglik die oorloop van urinale in badkamers waar jy in ander se urine moet loop om badkamers te gebruik. Wil voorkom of dit dan n aaneenlopende probleem is waaraan geen aandag geskenk word nie?

Die hoof-ablusieblok in Letaba is van die swakste in die hele Krugerwildtuin. Ons gebruik Letaba slegs as oornagkamp as ons tussen Satara en kampe verder noord reis. Dit is sonder twyfel een van die mooiste en boomrykste kampeerterreine in die wildtuin, maar fasilteite laat veel te wense oor. En, behalwe vir baie olifante, is Letaba (na my ervaring) een van die swakker wildareas in die wildtuin.

If you stay over in Magoebaskloof, dont get confused with Magoebaskloof Getaway. Fantastic place with 10 stands but you need a 4x4 to get in and out. Whatever you do DONT take the Georgesvalley Rd its horrible. Magoebaskloof is a 7km pass, not bad at all. I am driving that rd tomorrow morning 6H00 with a Quantum and a trailer. 

The R81 Duiwelskloof/Modjaji rd very bumpy and I stay away from that one as well. Up to Gravellote the road is in good condition.

Ek sekondeer die roete. Moenie verby die  Gravellot Slaghuis ry sonder om Biltong en Chilli-bites te koop nie.

Ek het laas probeer uitkyk vir hom, maar gemis.....ek het gedink dit was by Mica....maar daar gaan niks aan nie. 

Baie dankie almal. Kan nie wag vir volgende week nie. Ons slaap oor by Phalaborwa Safari Park. I really appreciate!! I think we are already addicted to the caravanning community! 

Oulike plek - Phalaborwa Safari Park. Ons het nog net een keer vir 'n aand daar oorgebly, maar sal dit verseker weer doen as ons in die toekoms weer Phalaborwahek gebruik. As ons suide toe gaan, soos ons volgende Mei beplan (en reeds bespreek is) slaap ons graag die eerste aand in Malelane kamp.
