Reverse camera
Would anyone know how to test the signal feed coming out the reverse camera [ or lack there of ] . I suspect the reverse cam could be fried, but would like to test it before buying another.
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
Problem is if it is fried then you don't get any signal either.
I had a cheap second camera that I use to test the camera system. It boils down to if the second camera don't supply video feedback there is something else that's wrong.
I basically had an extra camera, monitor and cables to assist fellow camping mates with trouble shoot. Always started with camera, then monitor then try and sort wiring

How would you test for signal with a mutimeter at the camera.

Not what you are asking, but, I had problems at the connectors at the tow hitch. Thin wires oxidized/rusted.

Hi Richard, spent quite some time on the system from the unit in the dash to the camera, i appear to have continuity between the unit and the cam. so suspect the cam , just unsure how to test for out put signal. the dash unit is triggered when reverse is selected but a message pops up on the screen saying no video signal.

The other problem I encountered was that screen was on Video 1 but camera is connected to Video 2 ........
changed selection and hey presto an image again .....

Apologies George you are talking reverse camera and not rear view camera ...

Normally there are 4 wires going to the camera. Two of them will be 12V + and -. The other two is the video feed + and - back to the monitor.
All though the RC video feed cable looks as if it is a single cable the outer part of the RC connector is the Neg and the center inner the Positive.
If you can measure 12V DC at the supply wire right at the camera there should be video feed on the RC Cable if the camera is serviceable. I do not know what the connections look like at the camera end of your vehicle. If it is a component plug you will have to find the 12V feed and then check the RC feed to monitor.
I never tried to measure the RC feed to monitor. I just connected a small loose monitor that I know is serviceable to the RC feed. If there was a picture the camera was OK.

Thanks, got power going into the cam, going to pick up a cheap cam this week and test.........

Well, got a cheap reverse cam and new cables from a china place in Cape town, spent most of the morning replacing the cable from the unit at the dash through to the rear of vehicle and plugged the new cam in.
Turned the key on, selected reverse.......... NO VIDEO SIGNALÂ pops up again on the screen.
Removed and striped the unit , [ its a radio come reverse cam and some other things unit ] traced the camera circuit on the printed board with a multimeter and appears to have continuity throughout,Â
More though is needed, will sleep on it tonight.

Maybe the format of the signal is not compatible with the unit at the dash?
There are quite a few different formats
- MP4.
- MOV.
- WMV.
- AVI.
And a few more than those as well.
