Intruders
After almost 5 years and staying at 13 different towns / campsites we are now at Leentjiesklip? Langebaan, the very first municipal park we have stayed at since the start of this road trip.
And we got robbed, we were however for warned as reading the reviews and speaking to those in the know indicated this happens from time to time here, so we set up and prepared accordingly not that a lot differed from our norm as we always prepared for the unlikely event .
2.30 am the other morning the alarm in the tent went of, a sound we never really wanted to hear...........in the time it took me to get out of bed , pick up the fire extinguisher and to get outside? they were gone. in there haste to leave after the alarm went of they grabbed a packet of cigarettes, a lighter, a pair of? cheap sunglasses that were on the table with the cigarettes , 2 towels that were on the chair at the table and an umbrella that was hanging over the back of the chair which they dropped and left outside the tent. [ the fire extinguisher was to be used to give a full blast of powder in the face of the intruder ]
Went and found security on there cell phones in there office at the front gate who said I need to report it at the main park office when they open at 8am. Reported at the park office at 8 am and asked to see camera footage, [ there are cameras in the park ] to be told the video footage is at an office in Vredenburg and could only be accessed if I bought in a SAP case number. of to cop shop , gave a statement , got a case number and returned to the park office who clearly took the case number and put it in file 13 as a week later have heard nothing, me thinks those cameras do not work.
Anyway as that morning went by and people started waking up we found that 5 other caravan tents had been broken in to, some had there tents cut to get in. however nobody lost any big stuff an it seems the intruders just focussed on small items that they could get in there pockets.
As we intend staying here untill the end of September I have added more lighting outside and around our set up and have added a second alarm that should pick them up before they get to the tent. [ it was not load shedding when they did the rounds ]?Whilst I know I cant paint all parks with the same brush, we will rethink these on the beach parks in the future..........?
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
Ai, jammer om te hoor. Sterkte George! As jy voor einde September wil aanbeweeg, is oord bereid om te refund?
WAARSKUWING:
Kampeer is aansteeklik en verslawend ðŸËÂ

Sorry to hear this George.
The apathy of security and management is very disappointing.

We going to stay untill the end of September as it fits in perfectly with our travel plans. Have been here three and a half months already and hopefully this is an isolated incident. [ I guess it could happen anywhere really ] along with the other campers we just a lot more vigilant now and nothing of value is left in the tent anymore.

You should try Yserfontein. It is a municipal caravan park too but much pleasanter than Lientjieklip. It as also right next to the beach but with a dune seperating and has plenty of shade. I haven't heard of crime but then we don' live in Paradise.

I guess thats the difference between municipal parks and private parks, this is a really nice park and its run.......ok, however management and staff will get paid every month whether the park is full or not.
Private parks will mostly take a lot better care as they need parks to be full in order to stay afloat and tend to stay clear of adverse publicity.

Yzerfontein? dont do long termers, well they do but you pay the same daily rate regardless of how long you stand, which gets a bit steep over a month or so, was there a while back looks a very nice park.

I did not know that. We stayed there several times for a few days each time and found it very pleasant.

George sorry to hear this, it's never a nice feeling at least you are taking some precautions.
We have stayed there many times and also heard talk about some petty theft happening from time to time. Fortunately we have never experienced that at Leentjies.
Hope the balance of your time there is without further intrusion.
Sorry to read about this, but with longterm campers:
You must be "Wake-Up" and sleep light with your "Iron" next to you.
We never had such a problem, but I am always prepared, such as enough lighing, alarm, and Iron.
Not nice George sterkte
Haak daai wa kamp bly koning
Sad but reality, camp alarm definitely worth the effort,on low cost budget IV found tripwire with peg switch very effective,a flashing stove or alarm is definitely a phycological deterant,as other have commented,in shady areas preventative measures definitely worth the effort
