Hansen geyser
The electric Hansen geyser [ water heater ] which i fitted to our caravan 4 years ago is now tripping the earth leakage on the caravan DB board, when i remove the earth wire from the plug it works perfectly. however i dont want to run it like that. anyone else had this issue before, suggestions what to check ?
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
Hi George, not on van but house. Geyser kept tripping, saving electricity bill :).
The element was 'leaking' causing a foam like buildup. Replaced and no further problems.
Living the dream

have your element tested Phase to earth = Trip
It detects small stray voltages on the metal enclosures of electrical equipment, and interrupts the circuit if a dangerous voltage is detected
I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Set the multimeter on the lowest omhs setting, put the probes onto the 2 wires on the element and it reads 55 omhs, leave 1 probe onto one element wire and the other probe onto the body of the element and get no reading, which i assume is good. however when i turn the omhs to a higher setting on the multimeter [ for the body test ] im getting a reading which i assume is no good, as this now indicates a leakage, am i doing this right ? I have the water heater on the table stripped.

Hi George. With a multimeter you can only measure the resistance of the element. You need to use a megger to check if your element is down to earth which in your case is the problem, because if you take of the earth and it working, you have the answer.
If you take the earth of,the casing will become live and can trip nothing because se path to earth is broke, and if you touch it you are the earth which then can either trip yourself or the earth leakage.
a megger is a insulation tester and you set it on twice the working voltage to megger a instalation, motor, element etc.It will show if your element is down to earth.
Taking of the earth is just a easy way to illiminate the fault if you do not have a megger, but please change your element.
