Half way stop b& b between Durban and Montagu
We are planning a holiday to Bonnievale 5 days and camping a week in that area of W Cape.
Can someone suggest a reasonably priced and attractive b& b stop over with safe parking for our car and our Skipper for overnight around half way.

Which route are you taking between the two towns ?
Probably via Bloemfontein

You are looking for B&B accommodation, but in Trompsburg (about your halfway point) is Fox Den - a neat and safe place to stay over, but self-catering. We once stayed there and found their facilities complied to all our needs. You can find them on Lekkeslaap.

At Bloem you can stay at Reynecke Park. Ot 2 hours further, at Gables Inn at Colesberg. We have stayed at both several times, at Gables just a few days ago. Both are quite acceptable and reasonably priced. At Reynecke Park, call to make sure of accomodation as they are not very big. At Gables there won't be a problem. There are also several reasonable places near Gariep dam but as we haven't stayed over there resently, I am not sure whether they are still operating and what their standards are at present.

As you are taking the van with, why don't you rather camp somewhere? I can strongly recommend the Forever Gariep resort next to the dam. This is about half an hour's drive before Colesberg and is well run. With the pensioner's discount, the tariffs are also very good. This is our usual stopover if we travel with our Skipper, which is mostly.
And by the way, Reynecke Park also have caravan stands with private ablusions.

Another option is the N2 coastal route ( more scenic) Durban to Yellow Sands ( +~ 640km ) , Yellow sands to Plettenberg Forever Resort ( 539km ), and the last stretch to Montagu is 364km. The N2 is in excellent condition, Sunday is best day to travel the first leg.If time is on your side , you can spend two nights at each place.
I see on Google Maps, the distance along the coastal route is about 100 kilos shorter than the one past Bloem, but the travelling times are more or less the same. I guess this is due to the towns you pass through on the coastal route. It is really a spectacular route, but the one time we drove it- not on a Sunday- was a bit of a schlepp especially through Umtata. And there were two long stretches of bad bypases due to roadworks plus a bridge near PE that had washed away causing another reroute. It must be a pleasure to drive now.

Fred we find it too much of a hassle camping overnight with the Skipper as we have to take the tents and leave them outside the van which is a risk. The model T does not have storage place for tents and you have to pack everything on the floor which does not allow access to cupboards. The only drawback with a T. Have been looking at Colesberg and Gariep accommodation.

Chris, Fox den looks a definite possibility and the distance from Durban to Trompsburg about right.

There is a game farm on the banks of the Orange river quite near the dam where we stayed some time ago which you might consider. It is called River Destiny Lodge. They have permanent tents as well as rooms and we found it quite pleasant and affordable. I could not find their present prices on internet.

Another place you can stay at is Waschbank River Lodge close to Norvalspont below Gariep Dam wall. Camping and Chalets.
Booked at Fox Den in Trompsburg. Think this will do us fine. Hope there is a place we can get a meal nearby.
