Extended Rally tent option
Morning. The wife and I have an old 1992 Jurgens Fleetline L and spent the last week in Skukuza. There and at other camps previously visited we seen quite a few campers with an extended rally fitted to the existing rally which makes great for the additional cover. I've done the whole google thing and can't find anything telling me how it's all put together.
Thinking of having one made, but have no idea as to setup (how poles all fit together, extra poles and fittings required, etc). Please help.
Another quick question is I had the aluminium extrusion replaced on both sides of the caravan with the only service provider within 200kms, and sorry to say but will definitely not be using them again as it was a horrendous experience. With the new extrusion however I could barely fit the rally tent it was so tight and took my wife and I a good 30 minutes to get it setup. Might anyone have any tips or tricks?

The 'new' aluminium could have a very thin protective layer on it from the manufacturing & storage process??
I suggest:
1. Take a piece of cloth and put thinners on it and wipe the inside of the extrusion' with it - careful not to touch other areas of the caravan - thinners will 'attack' the painted surfaces.
2. Wipe with clean dry cloth and let it air dry for an hour or so.
3. Take Johnsons baby powder (or Talcum? powder) and sprinkle it in the extrusion - now try to insert the rally rope section - powder acts as 'lubricant', reducing friction for rope to slide easier.
Hope it works?
Thanks for the advice and will give it a try and let you know ð
Gebruik silicon spray....een van die specs wat hul noem op kannetjie is vir karavaan tente. Dit vlek ook nie die materiaal nie

Applications
- Renew plastic, vinyl, and leather surfaces
- Lubricate curtain tracks and caravan tent grooves
- Lubricate kitchen drawers, cabinets, desk drawers and sliding security gates
- Knitting, sewing and textile lubricant for cutting tables, shears, sewing machine tables and iron presses
- Reduces ice build-up on the elements and walls of fridges and freezers
- Revent car door locks freezing
- Use as a mould release
- Improves the sealing property of rubber or plastic seals around windows and doors

I would also suggest the silicone spray. It leaves a powdery residue behind that provides the lubrication.
Something to remember it that the areosol agent that acts as the transport for the silicone can damage the waterproofing on the tent. So do not spray this on the tent. Spray it on the aluninium and wait a few second for the agent to evaporate before pushing the tent through.

Adrian welcome to the forum you have excellent response to the extrusion problem. Here is a bit on the extended rally.
The extended rally is basically just that - another rally, they sow a zip onto the existing rally and the second rally and you zip them together - usually the tent maker will provide all the extra poles, fittings and instructions that you require to set it all up. Its actually very easy to setup. Your local / nearest caravan shop should be able to assist you.
If not there are a couple of good tent makers in Pta that will do it and courier the package to you in Komatipoort. I'm sure there must be a caravan dealer in Nelspruit tho.
I support the idea of silicon spray and am also the aware of the possibility of overspray. You do get an aerosol can that has a long thin tube supplied that you can fit in place of the normal small spray head. That is ideal for lubricating inside the extrusion. Another possibility is silicon in a plastic bottle with a hand operated pump similar to Windolene bottles. This is more accurate that the aerosol can. I bought mine at a auto spares shop. Silicon also can be used to make window drapes slide easier.
And by the way, I have found that the gas lifters on our Skipper tends to get dusty and resistance to pulling down the roof increases. I wet a piece of tissue paper with silicon and wipe down the gas lifter shafts. This effectively cleans and also lubricates the shaft without soiling the canvass walls. This is perhaps also a good idea for all gas lifters. Silicon will not damage the seals inside the gas lifters.

For bigger awning, you can use your tent without using the side walls

Thank you so much for all the responses, have already given the missus instruction to pick up a tin of aerosol from Builder's when she goes to Nelspruit ð.
As to the rally, have also spoken to someone out of Witbank and it sounds promising.
Next trip is 10 days to Punda, looking forward to it
Do you have the second rally already available?
All I did was to set the rally up in front of the main tent or in your case in front of the original rally.
I bought two of the single plastic knuckles that are used to set up the new caravan tents.
I then split them in half by removing the cap screw in the centre. Now you have 4 pieces which has a half flat part on one end. You just drill the hole where the cap screw came through a bit larger and this then will fit over the tent pole pin of the original already set up rally or main tent. You basically will use 3 halves of the fittings with one to spare.
Place the half end of each fitting over the tent pole pin coming through the original tent or rally. Now you can insert the horizontal poles of the new/extended rally into the fittings. Normally these would have round plastic end on to fit in the side socket of the caravan, but its not a problem. If the side poles are the thinner ones it is advisable to insert a thicker piece of pole into the plastic fitting first. I made them long enough stand out about 150mm.
The last prep you will have to do is extend the ropes on each side of the new rally which is attached to the flap that normally lies on top of the caravan roof. So when you set up the extension rally, these will assist to hold the extrusion side of the rally over the plastic fittings placed over the original rally front pole pins. The fittings will also prevent the new rally from chafing on the pins.
Hope this make sense. If you do it this way all you have to buy or do extra is buy the two single knuckle plastic fittings and split and drill them. Pieces of pole to fit inside them. And rope to extend the pull through ropes on the rally.
No zips, No fuss. Just a normal tent set up.
I use to do this when we went camping for the April holidays in Ballito. Lots of personal area under the main tent and rally.
