Exclusive axles
Well, after placing an order with Alko for 2 new axles for the exclusive , Alko called me and asked for measurements. Now the most accurate way to do the measurements would be to have the axle out, so an hour and a half later I had the axle on the ground next to the caravan and then sent them the required measurements.
Its will take about 4 weeks they said as they have to manufacture them in between there production run. No problem as we will be here another 5 months
.Â
As I only have 2 trestles in the interest of safety I will replace the one first when they come and then remove the other one. Oh and my insurance company came to the party and paid for the axles in full.
anyone interested in buying 2 used axles, sure they will be good for a light trailer of some sought.
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
I was wondering how the axles were progressing.
Interesting on the weight at 900kgs. My understanding is the the 'net?' weight is 1850 lbs.

George glad you are wining with the axles, a job I would not take on by myself. ð¬

These are the original axles, i guess x2 comes in at 1800kg, the ones they are supplying me will be 1000kg each .

Did I type lbs or was it autocorrect ??

As this is basically an upgrade to your Axles will or do you now need to update your caravan licence to reflect the change as well ? allowing you to carry extra weight.
My plate shows
T: 1504KG
GVM: 1800KG
GAU/BAE: 2400KG

Brian that is a good question as the Nat Road Regs sees axle changes as a modification which requires re-registration.
Can anyone give an informed opinion on this?

Richard, do you have the modular chassis or the std chassis.

Brian, im not going to bother about that, i probaly already carry to much weight anyway.

Richard, i made a mistake on my qoute on specs mentioned further up, they are supplying me the B1000 braked 2051 same as yours i see , just checked the part no on the order form ] which they said is rated for 1500kg, can only be better then what i have at the moment.

Richard, part no quoted matches your axles

Great, that should comfortably cover the weight requirement.
Personally I would not like to weigh my 'loaded' van, although we pack a lot of weighty items in the DC.
Living the dream

George, still be careful when loading the caravan. The axle might be able to carry an increased load, but with caravan floors and chassis as they are built now, they might not be able to carry more weight. But you seem to be quite well informed, so I guess you have considered this already.

The new axles arrived the other day and a day and a half later they were both installed, a straight forward job really just awkward with the space available and of course heavy when doing it on your own.
Set the brakes up , had all 4 wheels balanced and we good to go. Should not have to do this job again, in my life time anyway.

I see the new axles came with shock mounts, would anyone have a pic of there van with shocks fitted, if i know how and where the top mounts are......... and what shocks are used , this may be the way to go.

I found Alko indeed have shocks designed to go with the rubber axles. I considered installing shocks on my Oyster a while ago. I needed particularly short ones and ALKO had such ones. Because they did not have stocks of the appropriate ones at the time, I abandoned the project. . It would have needed a bit of jiggling as the Oyster is not designed to take shocks.
Anyway, I downloaded Alko's complete catalogue from the internet and this also showed the shocks, in three capacities if I remember correctly, for different loads. I did save it somewhere on my computer but I cannot find it immediately. I am sure you will be able to find it on internet.

My van has shocks on, unfortunately we will only be back in SA in Jan if you haven't come right yet I will be able to take some pictures for you then although it's an ALKO it's a different model to the local ones used here. My axle is an ALKO DELTA SI 18-1.
George I did find this picture on the net not sure if it will assist you. Can ALKO not give you the info as where to mount the shock on the chassis? https://www.popscreen.com/prod/MTYzNDcyOTc2/HALTER-PKWANHÄNGER-mit-ALKOACHSE-MONTAGESET-zum-stecken-244-088
