A vary rare and unfortunate incident. The only way you can be secure from the animals is in solid walled camping equipment. A leopard or other wild animal is not obstructed by being raised off the ground in a roof top tent. They can all jump very well.
We have camped with wild animals in a ground tent on numerous occasions in northern Botswana. We luckily never had any incidents. Lions and leopards have walked around our tent at night but never touched it.
Groete,
Paul
Years ago we also slept in a small 2 man tent in Savuti had hyenas smelling right next to us at night could smell their breath through the tent and woke to find our cooler box was gone. Found it chewed up about 10m from us. One morning we had lions about 50m from us at the water point, thankfully that was on the last day before moving on to Vic falls, was rather scary but fortunately they left us alone. Also had a few scary moments, prior to the Lion incident, with ellies at the same water point. Ranger was furious with us saying we left the tap open, but we didn't the ellies came into the camp regularly and they knew exactly how to open the taps.
Won't be doing that again anytime soon
Never have any food in your tent. Preferably not even toiletries. Some animals like baboons and hyenas eat tooth paste and toilet paper. Only keep your clothes bag with only clean clothes in it in your tent. Don’t leave your shoes outside the tent they will be eaten or carried away. Leave all your fresh food in the car and the rest in lockable steel trommels. Badgers, baboons and monkeys are the main food thieves and will break anything to get to the food. Don’ t keep any fresh fruit with you. The elephants will do anything to get to it and nothing stops them.
Lekker kamp.
Groete,
Paul
Better not to camp in a tent where animals can get to you. I will certainly not risk that.

Do NOT camp at North Gate Moremi without leaving someone behind to look after tents and rooftop tents. Those baboons TEAR open any tent.
You'll never never know if you never never go
We collapse our tent when we leave camp. At Kwai…North Gate we watched the baboons from a distance. They arrived after we left and scrounged around climbing onto the collapsed tent. When they found nothing the left. The big male leader leaves first followed by his troop. We had no damage just paw prints all over our collapsed tent.
Groete,
Paul
I am of the opinion that the biggest risk pertaining to roof-top tents is not that of curious wild animals, but rather that of falling off the ladder, especially when missing one of the two upper steps when climbing down.
A friend told me of a lady friend of theirs who had to be flown by chopper from Botswana with bone sticking through the skin after a midnight ladder fall whilst getting down to answer mother nature's call. Apparently she was an athletic lightweight. Imagine if she was a bit on the heavy side, the damage could have been much worse.
At the time (some > 25 years ago) that news convinced me not to fit a roof-top tent to our Land Rover, although I must admit, one can get very nice versions these days.
It is not how old one is that matters, it is how one is old that matters. One do not stop playing because one is old, one is old because one stopped playing.
I am also past the age for roof top tents. You also have to close them up every time you want to drive out. They are popular though, especially with the international tourists. I however don’t want to tow anything when in serious off-road conditions. That is why we still use a ground tent when we know the going is going to be tough.
Nothing made from canvas will protect you from predators and solid sides wont even protect you from elephants.

Paul
