The 7 pin socket on my vehicle does not have the blue wire. The wiring on the caravan socket has the blue wire connected. Some diagrams show the "blue" wire to be the brake, others for the fridge, fog lights, or open etc.
The caravan does not have a 12V system and it appears that the blue wire is for the brake lights.
My predicament is that the entire harness of the vehicle needs to be changed/rewired ? or is there a simple solution?.... Thanks

I would change the caravan wiring to the SABS standard.

Fit a relay and decent fuse holder then run your fridge whilst you drive.

Here is another document with wiring details for the pig-tail from the caravan.

Gellies I agree with the SABS standard. Al trailer/caravan manufactures are using this standard and it is the safest option. If you don't follow this standard it could just mean blown fuses etc to say the least.

I fully agree to keep it standard. The standard does allow for all functions.

Gone are the days where each make had their own standard. Very long ago I might add.

If you keep to the std wiring, your vehicle will at any time be able to tow any trailer/caravan.

I would advise this.

Johan, die ouer karavane se absorpsie ("three way") yskaste het 'n 12V element wat you yskas koud hou terwyl jy ry.

I have seen a suggestion to connect the caravan rearview camera to the number 2 auxilary socket on the 7 pin plug.

As the Camera is on a coaxel cable, does it not require two points of connection?

Failing which, what is the best (most practical) connector to use to connect between the van and tower?

Richard normally one would use a 4 point connection 2 for the 12V and 2 for the camera signal. If you have a battery in the van that could be used for the 12V and then one can keep it charged via the spare point 2 as you suggested. You would then still need 2 wires for the signal that is normally on the RCA plugs.

This connection could be used if you need to get 12V to the van and the signal to the monitor. A male and female is needed.

On all other vehicles except Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50, I use the no2 pin for the camera connection and works brilliant.. You connect the earth to earth and the video signal wire to pin2. Done. If you have a battery in the van you can use that to power the camera, sometimes I use the vehicle park lights to switch on camera.. Works a charm.

For the Ford/Mazda and sometimes other vehicles like Mercedes we add another 7 pin socket on the other side or where practical and neatly, then you can power it up from there, with wiring for signals etc. You would have pins to spare, and a second socket doesnt look as odd as you might think.

The 7pin socket is easy to get and sort of keeps the connection tight enough, So no need for special sockets sourcing etc.

Thanks Danie and Pieter

We are changing vehicles and so need to put in a new screen with cables to connect to existing wiring of the van. Exclusive does have battery. Not sure how the camera is powered, need to follow wires I guess. Bnc connectors were used.

Pieter I assume the cables earth is the braiding on the outside, and video signal wire the core.

According to Purple SA it is better to power the camera from the tow vehicle...I think only because it is off when not towing?.  No power drain on carvan battery when at unhitched.

You need a minimum of three wires from the camera to the display device..one for +12V, one for ground -12V and also video Gnd, and one for the composit Video signal.

If you power the camera from the caravan battery you need only 2 wires, ground/earth (pin 3) and video signal (on spare pin...pin 2 if you wish).

Mine is power from tow vehicle with a separate 4 pin plug / socket

Paul

I checked the usage of the pins on the van. All 7 are being used. Pin 2 has an extra cable, thus assume the it is power for the camera.

Therefore the new tower will have to have power to its pin 2 !??

We had an autoelectrian install the camera, who has left our valley.

Richard any auto elec will be able to check if your pin 2 on the van goes to the camera or if it is perhaps wired to charge the battery while towing. Charging the battery was quite common a few years ago when we were using 3 way fridges and using the 12V from the tow vehicle to keep the fridge cold.

The first time I installed the camera on the caravan I made use of pin 2 (Blue) as the + 12V to the camera and pin 3 9white) as the - 12V (earth).

The camera did not function properly then.  It went on and off in time with the indicators when I used the indicators.

This could have been due to the way that pin 3 was earthed.

Leon yes I for one do not always check my earth pin until one finds a problem due to corrosion or voltage drops and a lot of times this common connection is exposed to all the moisture. On my Jazz where I had the towbar installed by Honda I don't even know where they wired the various connections.

Now I have one 4 core cable streching from the camera to the  front of the caravan.

There I connect the power and the AV cables.  Works 100%
