finally the day came , went on retirement last friday the 1st febuary, and we pulled in at our 1st stop here at richards bay caravan park on friday the 1st febuary. as we had already picked out the campsite 6 months ago i knew how how i was going to set the site out, and the whole camp set up went together as expected. the internet system took a while to get set up [ we had been using a telkom adsl land line prior to moving ] and now we had to go wireless, anyway after much research i managed to couple my exsisting telkom e mail adress to another service provider and all works well now. our site is opposite the park workshop, the other day one of there machines would not start so i went over and fixed it for them, friendly guy the workshop guy , said i can use the workshop anytime i need to do maintenance to my vehicles. to set the dstv dish up i got the compass out and pointed the dish east and set the vertical at 36.6 degrees ,some bush was in the way so the workshop guy got his crew to cut the bush away, connected the saterlight finder and honed in on the saterlght and strapped the rig down , works well. [ a method i had practiced in the garden a few months ago ] went back and fetched the boat on Thursday , a 700km round trip which we did in 1 day, the bakkies right rear tyre burst 20km outside pongola, found a large flat piece of metal embedded in the Tyre when we stopped, anyway fitted the spare and the rest of the trip back was uneventful , will have to buy a new tyre but ill sort that out next week. had our first minor storm last night and our re enforced tent structure stood up perfectly, [ i had designed and tested then re designed and re tested the structure in storm conditions in the garden a year ago ] so i know its good.however there will be that one mother of all storms thats bound to cause damage , so a few months back i put together a repair kit , poles ,  pole cutter, pop rivets, popgun, drilling machine, spare canvas, strong needles, gut etc. we hope we never have to use it. monkeys, .....they always around,  but the workshop guy gave me a  plan, its a high frequency speaker system. it couples to the caravan battery and emits a sound that we cant hear but drives monkeys away, he said they use it at the outdoors area at the lodge next door , i checked it out and they recommended it, so i ordered one , should be here next week. i think it will be money well spent as there will be monkeys at most parks we intend staying at in the future. anyway. while we are both adjusting and fine tuning our " comfort zone " we already know this is a life style we can both comfortably slip into, and even in the short time we have been here its clear that the effort and work we put into the preparations for this adventure is already paying of. well , thats all for now, and as crocodile dundee would say,   no worries mate.

Enjoy George.

Can you please tell us more about the monkey speaker. Where to buy it, how does it work? Is it really effective?

imformation on on the monkey alarm system, the manager at the lodge next door showed me there installation and said it worked very well, hence i orderd the single speaker unit, which i intend placing in a front corner of the tent.

the following is an insert that was sent to me, the suppliers details are at the bottom

The BABOON / MONKEY WATCH is a    tube-shaped device (weatherproof housing, not prone to corrosion) that emits a variable high pitched Doppler sound  which helps deter both baboons and monkeys. The unit has a frequency adjustment as well as a day/night sensor

Will not  affect your dogs and cats, or even birds. They have different hearing ranges from baboons and monkeys.

The BABOON / MONKEY WATCH works off 12V DC . Frequency is adjustable, so that if the baboons / monkeys become used to one frequency, you can simply change it. The 12V dc  3 Amp transformer  simply plugs  into any household electrical outlet.

The main units has an extension speaker output option  . The extension speaker can be mounted up to 10 m  away and has the same type of housing as the main unit

Its range is approximately 20-25 m in front of the speaker. The pole mount units have a 360 degree range .

BABOON/MONKEY WATCH is a deterrent aid in keeping them away and you should notice a reduction/elimination in their presence over a period of time in the area covered by the device. All normal precautions should still be used to help keep them away.

The unit carries a six month warranty against faulty workmanship excludes postage costs

If you’d like to order a unit, I’ve attached our Delivery Request form as well as bank details. Kindly complete the form and return to me soonest with your proof of payment. Delivery lead time is approximately 5 – 10 working days depending on stock availability

If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
Yours sincerely
Doug Reid

This sounds similar to a sound device I once almost ordered from the USA. It sends out an ear piercing sound (note) when the device detects a bark from a dog. Aparantly this sound hurts the dog to a point where the animal will run away and stop its barking. The unit aparantly resets its pitch after every delivery. I did not buy the unit .... I prefered to call in the chuck outs from Corner Bar to sort out the owner. (Joking)

We had a problem with small dogs barking from a unit in the complex we stay. The owner got a similar device.  Looks like a small bird cage. Dogs still bark now and then but that long continous anoying barking has stopped.

Works like a dream.

This idea sounds good but it is quite expensive. As mentioned, a single speaker unit costs R850 plus a 12V power unit plus delivery costs while a four speaker unit costs at least R2350 plus extras and a 8 speaker unit R2850 plus the extras.  I guess a single speaker unit is not regarded as adequate so you will have to fork out more than the R1000 odd which is a bit above my ability.  And then I have no definite proof of the effectiveness of the unit, making it somewhat of a gamble. Monkeys and baboons are a bother sometimes,  but up to now we have been able to control them, so I would rather go without this system.  We close all canvall flaps when we leave the caravan in monkey or baboon country and stow edibles in the nose box, which is empty after pitching the tent etc.   I hope someone that has used this system and can vouch for its effectiveness will come forward.  Perhaps then I might change my mind.  I would also want to know why a single speaker unit is not enough.

fred, if you have a 12 volt battery in the caravan , you dont need the 12 volt power unit.[its just a transformer ] i only orded the 1  speaker unit, which i will connect to the caravan battery. ill give feed back on its efficiently when i get the unit, but from what iv seen around here , one unit appears to keep more than a campsite clean,

however, as mentioned above ill give first hand feed back when the unit arrives.

The data supplied by Doug, the supplier, indicates the single speaker unit has a range of 20-25 meters. That should be adequate for a campsite, specifically the inside of your tent.

My concern is the horizontal gradient of the projected noise. Does not help if you have 25meters distance, but in a narrow area.

I am considering the single speaker system with a slave speaker to ensure I cover at least the tented area of my camp. Previous damage by two monkey visits was in excess of this cost.

This will cost R1,350 with the transformer. Without, it will be R1,200 plus postage.

As I suspected, the radius of the soundbeam is not great. See the supplier answer to a question I asked:

The length from master to ext speaker max 10m but 6m is recommended so the speakers are closer for more effect and also if the cable run is to long then the power loss to ext speaker will be high. We do not supply cable as every installation is different, The cable to use is standard rip cord like you would use for bedside lamps etc. 0.5mm is the correct size.

If there are say 5 to 7 monkey scare units in a single campsite, all eminating various pitches, wil the various pitches cancel each other out ?

I have no experience on this subject, but my guess would be that the cacaphony created by all the different systems will completely scare away the monkeys.  For two sounds to cancel each other out, you have to have quite different circumstances, circumstances where the two sounds are equal but 180 degrees out of sync.

The system powerbox comes with an automatic day/night switch. As I intend using this in my tent due to the narrow gradient of the  soundwaves, the supplier disabled this switch for my indoor use.

So, I need to switch on manually as the light in the tent will not be enough to trigger the day/night switch. I will not be chasing monkeys for all around me. Maybe they prefer them around.

well, week two went by, and wilst the preparations of the set up and workings worked out well , one cannot rehearse the life style untill you acually live it, and now we start learning things.

first thing we have picked up on is that we have to much stuff, we adopting an approach that if we are not using now we are  probaly never going to use it, so we are having a sale again, and by the time we move in five and a half months time we will be a lot lighter.

weather wise we have had a lot of light rain and weather forcasts predict this trend will continue into the middle of next week, our set up has remained realy dry inside, however i expect heavy rain will probaly creep in under the tent.

we have not taken the boat out yet as the ski boat club had a week long competion on this past week resulting in a lot of boat traffic in and around the club , so we figured we would stay out of the way and go out this comming week when things are quieter.

wilst the life style is certainly better then waking up to an alarm clock that went of at 5 .30 every morning, then being at the work place at 6.45 , im not sure if i kinda miss that routine but i guess that doing that for so long its very different not having to follow that routine.

we have met a few people in the park, one couple has been staying here for as long as 14 years, some are semi permenent and others like us are just passing through.most keep to themselves though.

well ,thats all this week

no worries mate

To much stuff welcome to the club, the rule we try to practise (not yet full time), is if we don't use it in the last 6 months, time to sell to other members in the "club", stranges it looked so useable and nessary before you bought it !
