Hi All

My name is Scott.
My family and I generally go fishing a couple of times a year. I came across a caravette 6 in the junk mail and jumped on it. Now that I have had a few weeks of looking at it closely I can see why it was in the "JUNK" mail. Pun intended. So now I am wondering if it is even worth fixing up as the whole thing's wood is all rotten. The black part of the roof (Skirting I think its called) is broken all round so when it rains everything gets wet.

I have read a few threads on here about guys who have fixed up their caravans and i would like to get mine in shape to but is it really worth it or should i rather look out for something else?

Typical newbie mistake.

PS IF fixed can it be put through Road worthy without papers? If not then it would be useless to even fix up right?

Sorry I am as green as can be on this.

Scott, I have no experience in this type of thing so will leave it to the more experienced members to answer.
There was a guy from Natal looking at building a real gypsey type caravan with a chassis that he had from the same kind of experience that you have had.
Good luck.

No use to carry on with the project without registration papers, you are going to end up in a dead end street..

''Flog'' it ASAP

Gee Scott.

I hope that the previous owner paid you a few rands to get it of his yard?

My suggestion is sell the chassey or the whole caravan for scrap metal

Hi Scott....

Firstly, welcome to this neck-O-the-woods, Kick back, crack a frostie put yr feet up and enjoy the ride

We sure hope you enjoy your stay with us.

Now to the discussion...

Sadly I would also say get out while you can... You will way over-capitalise, and never be satisfied.

Then there is the problem of licence & reg.. If you think home affairs is a shambles.. Try the licence & reg dept... Starting with police clearance / back licence fees....

Anyhow that just my 3 Zuptas worth (no more rands & cents, they used to have a value)...

Slightly quicker downhill....
These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....

Scott, welcome to the forum, sorry to learn about your misfortune.frown

Sad how people get ripped off on the electronic and printed media by some $&*% screamers.

As suggested above, no papers, no road worthy, no go.

If you are a hands on diy person, have a lot of patience and some extra cash, you might end up with a nice expensive rebuild (home build) van, but, at a cost.

It is sad how people get ripped off every day, and some people thrive on the miss fortune of another.

Personally, I would sell it as scrap metal, to recover some of the losses already incurred.

Best of luck for the future camping experiences.

Scott my recommendation will be to try and rebuild it into a "Tuck Shop" where some guy can sell hamburgers or ice cream out of it. That is if you are a handyman and a DIY fundi. If you paid a lot then rather cut your losses and sell the shell to a scrapyard and move on. Remember all of us do make mistakes.....this time it was yours......move on and put it behind you and see it as one of life's lessons.

If the licence is 4-years or more in the arrears, the item get de-registered as a default and then to get everything back to normal, this will be a very, very long road with a lot of ''Bribes'' to pay to ''Certain'' people to get the actual registration back onto the licencing system again.

Ag nee manne, You are breaking my heart here. I really don't mind working on it but where i draw the line is with pouring money into something that i can't get onto the road and therefore wasting my money.

Will try recoup what i can and then start looking out for something better in the 2nd hand market. At least i know what to look out for now. School fees paid the hard way.

Let me know if anyone wants windows for a caravette 6 as they are about the only thing in great condition except the back one. And the battery system too.

I feel very sorry for your loss, but I might help you to obtain a Caravette 5, which is in a much more better condition as the your actual one.

Contact the following person:- Neels @ 082 874 5551. You can tell him that Dennis refer you. He is staying close to you in Alberton. He is staying in Albemarle, right behind the Scaw Metals residance flats.

Hi Scott,

Firstly, I am sorry to hear of your misfortune, not nice seeing someone get ripped off when wanting to start out. You didn't mention what you paid for the van, but I sincerely hope it was not too much, which would help recoup some of the loss.

Secondly, welcome to the forum, great bunch here. I hope you remain and become part of the family, some of us are a lot quieter than others :)

I have a caravette 6, and it really is a nice caravan. It is about the same year model as yours. If you do decide to sell what can be salvaged, I would be interested in the nose cone. My caravan also needed some work, but the nose cone was "lost" when someone offered to try repair it for me. Let me know if you opt for the salvage route, and what you would like for the nose cone and we can then discuss.

Good luck with getting the issue resolved.

Eisch, if you can get the papers sorted, break it up and start with a clean sheet, just the chassis.

Hi Scott,

I think you have enough above to chew on withou repeating.

Recently I bought a Slipstream which was deregistered and re-registered as a 2015. The seller had evidence that it was on his name and I did not expect any further problems.

However when it passed the roadworthy subject to police clearance. When they took it for the microdot the problems arose.

Firstly, if you can do the repairs yourself, I think it would be a nice challenge - not worth it if you must have it done.

Then, I have shared my experience in order to recommend you first get the paperwork right, before you waste more money and time. You may just find you will never get it on your name.

In my case there is still some hope - an honest previous owner refunded my purchase price as well as all my expenses. Yesterday, he dropped me an e-mail asking if I was still interested, as all is sorted out. All I want is for it to be legally on my name, in which case I am sure I will get value for money.

Hi Guys, I'm sure many of you are going away for the weekend and some even till the 28th in your caravans. Safe driving and enjoy.

I was wondering, I have a normal trailer. I was told by someone that I could use the licence disc of the trailer and put in on the caravan if I fixed it up, provided I never sell either nor tow both at the same time. Is this a possibility? If so I might just spend the time and money on fixing the Caravan up.

No this is not possible, you might get stopped by a very clever ''Cop'' and he checks out everything and of you go to the police station.

I know a couple of people using trailers that way, but luckilly for them, they were never stopped by a very clever ''Cop''.

Example: That is same, you have 2x cars, 1x car is roadworthy and registered and the 2nd not, but you use 1x licence disc for both.

Totally illegal

As Dennis said, it will be a bad experience when you get caught, it actually  is fraud with a heavy sentence if found guilty.
