Good morning
We bought a Jurgens Exclusive, which we will be towing with a Toyota FJ Cruiser and sometimes with a Toyota Fortuner.
Which stabilisers can we look at?
Sterkte
Welcome Desere,
For the Exclusive the only stabiliser rated high enough is the Straightliner. I have one on my Exclusive and it makes a small difference. The double axle Exclusive is a very stable tow. I often leave it off and the difference is marginal. But it gives peace of mind and it is easy to fit and use.
Without the Straightliner fitted, there is a slight wobble when a large vehicle passes. With it fitted, nothing!
Straight liner is n opsie
Ek het n Yellowblade vIr R850
I don't know what they cost but there is always the ALKO 3004 stabiliser which forms part of the hitch. Most of the imported caravans have them, I have one on my van - single axle GMV 1800kg and just slightly longer than the exclusive. Very stable on the road.
The Alko stabiliser will be available from ALKO South Africa. link They are very simple to fit.
Desere, it will be illegal to tow the Exclusive with an FJ Cruiser, as Toyota limited the legal towing capacity to 1500kgs. Please read this:

I don't think the authorities go by manufacturers recomendations/limitations. Tow vehicle Tarr must be equal to or greater than caravan GVM. When I went to the weigh bridge that is what they were intersted in....and some other weights according to the vehicle and caravan plates and tyre specs as on the tyre. Not, manufacturers limitations in the manual or their web site.
Pse don't quote me.
Then also, the manufacturer has his reasons. Better be safe than sorry. 1500Kg max is very limiting when you see what the GVM's are in the market.
There is also the issue of insurance refusing to pay out that must be considered. Better safe than sorry!
Only fout stabilizers that will work for the Exclusive.
Trapezium - Displace the towing point closer to the rear axle causing a more stable tow.
Straight Liner - Friction pad stabilizer developed specifically for heavy caravans.
AL-ko Stabilizer Coupling - Friction clamp around tow-ball type stabilizer
BPW Stabilizer Coupling - Friction Clamp around tow ball stabilizer. (see picture)
The last two stabilizer look very complicated but are very easy to fit.
Daar was n gesprek gelede gewees oor yellow blade se weergawe vir swaarder karavane.

Sorry Paul
Ek beskou myself as uitgetrap.
Dit is eintelik n' meganiese wonderwerk, vir my in elk geval.
End of problem!

Is the Tando good enough for a Sprite Splash?
Are all the Tando stabilizer suitable for 3.5ton or there are versions for 1.1ton? The reason I'm asking is because someone wants to sell me a 2nd hand one and I'm not sure if that one will suit me. Thanks.
Roderigo, I had a quick look on Google and it seems to me there is only one Tando model on the market. I personally do not believe a Tando or any stabiliser working on the friction pad principle actually is worth the money and would certainly not be able to handle a heavy trailer- 3.5 tons as you mention. Even for a light caravan of below one ton, like a Splash, I would not use it. I have a Tando which I haven't used for more than 30 years as I am convinced it does not work. It just gives you a false sense of safety which is going to leave you in the lurch at a critical moment. There is also a Al-Ko unit that works by clamping the tow ball but I am not convinced the torsion it exerts on the tow ball will not in time cause metal fatique which might eventually break off the ball. Furthermore, I do not believe a stabiliser is necessary at all. What is important is to load the caravan correctly, drive an a safe speed and do not do stupid things behind the steering wheel like quick jerks on the steering wheel.
If you are convinced you need a stabiliser, I would advise you to get one of the units that actually steer the van out of its sway, like a Trapisium.
I know that some members on this Forum have a different opinion, so it it up to you to decide what you are going to do.

Hi Fred I appreciate your comments. I am new to the caravan world, just did my first longish trip from Joburg to Skukuza and back. The towing was pretty much stable and I as driving 100-110km/h most of the time.
I'm not convinced it is a "must have" but what I read is it does help, so I'm kind on the fence.
The decision is yours, but do read as much as possible on the subject, on this Forum but also anywhere else you can find. I would say, until you are convinced you need a stabiliser, don't get one.
How did you and your family enjoy the Kruger? With a caravan slower is better. Even with the light and very stable we use at present, I limit my speed to 100k/u- on the GPS.

I will rather go for a new one at R1500. If you need to service parts on the old one....how much is it going to cost? ....plus your purchase price? I don't think far from a new one's price

Hi Fred we had a great time there. It was very hot during the day but at night it was perfect. The park was not too busy and now there is a new restaurant at Skukuza that is really good. I managed to find a goos camping site close to the ablutions and reasonably shaded.
Out of all my camping gear that I bought the porta potty was the most useful one by far! My wife and daughter loved it.
