Hi guy's

If we could get some help on a point of view on having a kitchen indoor or outdoor, as we have a caravan that has a kitchen outdoor, and find that having the fridge indoor is a strange setup, because when cooking, making coffee, or just about any preparation you are constantly in and out of the van to get something from the fridge or putting something in the fridge, so what would be the solution if any 🤔.

Personal preference is outside kitchen reason is keeping sleep compartment clean and without any food odour or dirt etc.   To keep family from in and out of fridge i use a seperate small cooler box and stock that with whatever we will need for the days use like milk snacks fruit and meat for evening barbeque to defrost.    Another cooler box is stock with drinks and kept cold with ice.  Inside fridge is used for long term cold storage like meat and stuff that must be frozen or kept cold for longer term.  Every morning i restock or re arrange as deem fit.     Works for us.

In all my years owning a caravan we have used the stove inside the caravan once to boil water for coffee during an over night stay.  Even the wash up basin was never used.

Now with the kitchen drawer that pulls out the side of the caravan everything works just fine.  We have to hop in the van to get to the fridge for the milk during summer time but that is no hassle for us.  During winter the milk stays on the table out side.

It would have been ideal if the fridge was positioned right at the door entrance of the caravan so to again access while standing outside but that would have had a large impact on the layout of the caravan interior.

So in short, we do everything outside same as Jin has explained.  Just hop in the van for the milk or cold drinks now and then.  No hassle.

Luhman that would be great to see how it was done, we were looking at perhaps buying a used Exclusive van and it could be the answer to all the negative thoughts.

Thanks

Robert.

We also do everything outside and try to avoid a continuous in and out of the caravan for many reasons. In my whole period of camping we boiled water once for coffee on the inside stove at Punda Maria gate.

In addition to the fridge being inside we also have an ice machine, which in the summer months, must stand inside. In the heat outside its capacity is halved. The meat for the evening braai is taken out in the morning and put in the inside basin....else monkeys eat it outside.  We have a small styrafoam cooler box in which we keep the ice for the evening drinks. It is filled and kept outside. We have even considered buying a small (45L) 220V freezer to be kept outside. I had one and sold it some 10 yrs ago (Staycold 45L). We also have a National Luna in the car in which all drinks are kept including the milk.

I think the small loose standing fridge/freezer outside is the best solution to limit in/out traffic.

Paul

We have a custom home build caravan. The fridge was paced in such a way that we do not need to climb in, but stand outside with fridge door near the caravan door.

The Staycold 42L chest freezer is no longer made. I see there are small bar fridges, Defy 46L and Goldair 60L and Diamond 60L and Hisense 60L for about R1700. They are all about 400x450x500mm. That would stop the in & out.

You can also use it at home as a drinks fridge. Then your big kitchen fridge stays closed more.

The Nayela Okapi Caravan has a fridge that is positioned right next to the door.  The caravan door for that matter is also a bit wider than normal caravans. Access to the fridge is a breeze.

Ek het net twee voorwaardes gehad toe ek n karavaan gekoop het.

01    Die kombuis moet binne wees
Op n koue reënoggend wil ek koffie maak
Op n reëndag wil ek droog bly wanneer ek stop and go

My probleem met n buite-kombuis : STOF!

Camping is all about the outdoors, so it is outdoor kitchen for us. Also I don’t like the smell of cooking in such a confined space. With the Tourer we can access the fridge from outside - the whole setup works well for us.

Geeniet julle aand.

Paul

Om terug te kom na oorspronlike vraag. Om n buite of binne kombuis te kies is jou eie keuse....elkeen kamp verskillend. By my is GEEN KOMBUIS die ideale karavaan.....dis hoekom ek so lief is vir die Expo

Just beware of having a fridge / freezer outside the van.

Baboons trashed our bar-fridge so badly that it was not economic to repair it. (It was locked)

Hi guys this topic is being very useful for me as I'm under the same dilema. I'm looking for a caravan to buy, never had one before. I rented a Penta last weekend and in fact I liked the inside kitchen despite the smell when cooking etc. It was a bit chilly outside so it was convenient to have it inside. in summer it would probably better to have it outside, so I'm kind of deciding between the Penta and Sprite Splash, there are some Gipsey Regal that I also liked, similar to the Penta.

Please give your comments.

I doubt whether many people do their cooking indoors,  even if they have an indoors  kitchen.  When camping, you tend to live outside and only sleep inside. In more that 30 myears of camping with a Sprite Supersport with an inside kitchen and oven, we very seldom used the inside stove, only sometimes in inclement weather.  We did use the oven now and again though.  That does not mean you have to have an outside kitchen.  Doing the cooking outside can very easily be done on a plug in hot plate, gas stove or over an open fire.  I have read that people sometimes have problems with the outside built in kitchen not being dust proof.  If I had to buy a conventional caravan now, I would like a stove inside for "just in case" but I would still do the cooking outside.  But the choice is yours.  Your choice would be what seems the best for you and not the consensus opinion.  Obviously when I say YOU, I mean your better half.

Hi Rodrigo.

Listening to the guys on forum they have a valid point, just a few days ago we bought an Exclusive and we found that we have made the inside the coffee station, and as the forum suggested that a small fridge outside for the real cooking and drinks, I suggest that you listen to the older campers they seem to a lot more than us.

The only thing is that outside kitchen is it is not user-friendly as we remembered from our Swing, we has bought a two plate stove / oven combination, as my wife spoils me with cake so that is something that I would encourage 😋.

Could luck with you're choice.

Thank you guys for all the valid comments. I am looking for the options, want to have a good value for money too. I have another trip booked with Gipsey Regal rented (also with an inside kitchen). We normally bring some pre-cooked meals and just warm it up at the camping site.

Once I decided what to do I'll let you know. The Sprite range is a strong candidate.

Cheers.

Rodrigo, Doing it your way makes a lot on sense: trying out different caravans to find the most suitable one instead om making a choice on paper.  Do let us know what your eventual choice is.
