Hi all my wife and I have got +- five years to go to our pensioners life, and only just started the caravaning life.

To a dream adventures to caravaning all over South Africa and the neighbouring countries, spending a month at a time in different regions WHAT A LIFESTYLE.

just one thing that worries us a LOT, is where on earth do all the pensioners go when the HOLIDAY rates come around,  and are there clubs that we can belong to, to keep the 600 percent hike under control.

We would like to know how the full timers can keep going and keep the budget safe.

WARNING:

Camping is contagious and addictive

I started camping 1990, but not on a regular basis - only when there was an occasion with friends etc. {with tents} We started serious camping since 2013/4 and only bought my first caravan in 2015. So I am quite new in caravaning and still learning a lot from our other forum members

The info with Flip en Tilla is value-able.  But you still have to work out a travel plan to various destinations. Or else your money saved with alternative accommodation will be eaten by the fuel you use traveling.

Normally the popular resorts along the coast have great rates for the full timers (pensioners).  During high season you just need to move inland to the less popular resorts.  Some times you will actually find Gem resorts there with more accommodating rates.

Then during winter the full timers race to Tshipise or ATKV Eiland to enjoy the warmer climate of the Northern Province.

More Almal

Ons het so 4jaar om te gaan, en kyk ook gereeld wat die mense praat en skryf wat reeds daar is. Ek wonder net altyd wat is genoeg om af te gaan? Lewens koste gaan so vreeslik op dat ons pensioen nie by hou nie. Sal die draad volg kyk ook gereeld na Kampmal om inligting te kry. Kamp Groete

to all future full timers out there to the question of how much is enough, this is how we went about it, consult with an experienced finical planner and get a very good indication of how much money you will have on the date you plan to retire, factor in projected growth after retirement alongside a determined a draw down rate , then plan your future life style around that amount

there are coastal caravan parks that keep there rates unchanged for pensioners right threw the year if you commit to at least a three month stay. therefore as we do, plan your route to include these parks at that time of the year.

Hi relaxed camper so true it is addictive.

Great to see everybody's on board.

Hi George thanks for the your input, but we will have to work on our own budget, we have got time to sharpen all the unnecessary expenses, the main one was the season charges.

Guy's we were told of the Swallows group, do any of you belong to such a group.

We were told that they do get special rates.

Leon thanks will look up those resorts.

Thanks

Hi Robert

We belong to the swallows and thus far all we have received is an e-mail with a list of other swallow members. Many caravan parks have special rates for pensioners and they try to keep it affordable. Non of them have ever asked us if we are Swallow members. There are many caravan parks that also do not increase their rates during holidays and peak seasons. Best thing is to communicate by e-mail and find the best one for you. You can find most of the caravan parks e-mail addresses on google or Facebook. Hope this helps

"A man needs an address" was the wisest words a long term camper told me after they sold everything and then fulltiming. His wife fell ill and a year later she died.

They had nowhere to go since their kids were overseas.

So lesson 1, keep a house or a flat that is yours to go to when things go wrong.

Like Willem said, we do not live forever!

The rest is fun to plan and do.

The swallows is nothing more than a friendship and social group. They are not involved in the organizing of camping tariffs.

Our settling in Ballito resulted in us feeling as if we are on a permanent holiday. We can see ourselves camping a lot less and thus saving a lot of money.

Very wise words there, got the misses and I  thinking all over again, but its going to be a huge climb to juggle all those expenses while enjoying the camping experience as a pensioner adventure.😰😰

hi Robert, fortunately or unfortunately we never had that decision to make, we never had a house as we stayed in a free company house for 15 years, however we saved the money monthly that a house would have cost us and that with investments and policy's an pension  and other assets we cashed in on we had X amount, now X amount would have bought us a place in a retirement complex or we could go on a full time adventure, [ could not do both ]  with careful planning over 5 years we through caution to the wind and are now on this full time adventure, and you don't need a lot of money to do this. there will always be the prophets of doom out there , the nay Sayers, and to those people this life style would just not suit, we just could not see ourselves sitting in a retirement complex waiting to die, were will this end we are often asked, well everything will be OK in the end, and if its not OK its not the end.

George hehehehe found the last part very funny about the not being the end.

A bit of our history.

2017 we bought a brand new Haval H2, we loved the car until three months ago we got itchy feet and we bought a 2004 Sprite Swing caravan, unfortunately the H2 is great but did not have the bottom torque, so we changing on Saturday we are receiving our brand new Mahindra XUV 500 W8 manual, and that again is meant to be our last car, we at the age of 65 years give ourselves another 5 years to totally retire so we are glad to be speaking to all you wise full time pensioners and learn on what not to do.

And hear what age is the limit to be caravaning or is there no end to that either.

Camping does not have a maximum age restriction. As long as you are able, you can camp. Yes, we plan and do things with the realisation that God is in control and His will be done.

If things turn out differently to what you planned, adjust and go on. Solomon wrote that you need to make known (consult on) your plans to the Father, and He will make your ways prosperous.

In the end, I use my saving on utilities at my house to pay for our camping. We have a lock-up and go house. Switch off all appliences, put the remaining vehicles' batteries on battery chargers, lock up, activate the alarm and go.

Food costs similar to that when at home. The only real additional cost is fuel, and that depends on how often you travel. I have found that here at Eiland we use less fuel during the month than at home.

Kindle for a regular braai one can account for as additional cost.

So for us, the time at Eiland works out the same as staying at home.

Touring obviously will be more expensive due to regular travelling.

Robert, just a quick one.

We also had in mind to retire to a (partly) full time camping - had the right van and vehicle, with own (paid) house and nothing to worry about.

BUT, as Proffie said, it is not for US to decide. Due to ill health we had to sell van, and now, after 6 years, we know that it was the better decision to stop at that stage.

If you plan to do it, and you have had a good discussion with Him!, (in prayer) and if you can afford it, do it as soon as possible. You may not know how you will be in 5 years  time.

We had to stop camping at 65. Some people carry on until in their 80'ties. That is a BLESSING from above. NO money can buy back good health!!! Only stay on your knees!!

Best of luck for the future!!

Regards,

Frans

PS: If you have a diesel vehicle remember to look for services stations for trucks etc. throughout the country where you can save up to R1.40 per litre on diesel!!

Hi relaxed camper.

It has taken me over an hour to find how it happened,  but it did.

Okay eventually it happened again so let's see if I can explain.

On the home page it says English AFRIKAANS, push the language you want to translate, and it tells you that advertising can't be changed, and then you got to the forum.

And that's where I don't understand why, but translate buttons appear and disappear then you slide your finger up down quickly and then it reappears.

I have taken a picture of my screen once un translated and one translated, I don't how to put photos on the forum, can anyone help with that one.

I think I got it right.

Perhaps the translate is provided by operating system? If I highlight the paragraph the 3 dots has a translate option and gives me 'tab'. (Using Android)
