A bit of them all, as long as it is 'Off The BeatenTrack' and NOT at a 'Resort'..... that is our main criteria.

Anywhere that is quiet, accessible and affordable is my kind of campsite.

Nothing nicer than camping next to a river or dam that actually has fish in it.

Mountain, river, safari - anything that is the bush that has animals, peace and quiet.  BUSH camping is our thing, no resorts, no caravans, no electricity (just basic ablutions) and we could not be happier.  The fewer stands the better.  Shady. lots of animals to watch - mmm, our kinda trip :)

p.s. we are off to bergsig eco estate this weekend, and will report back - it apparently only has about 3 bush camp sites.

My wife and I are retiring and becoming full timers. There are many questions that we would be grateful for any advice on. Here are some of them:

We both have previous camping experience. I used to camp at Midmar Dam and water-ski and over one Christmas and New Year week there was us and one other boat on the entire dam. My wife had a 1977 VW mobile camper van

1] We are in the process of buying a Jurgens Palma. This has been interupted by the lockdown.

2] I have a Merc C200 Kompressor automatic. Is this sufficient to tow the caravan. We intend to stay at a site for a few weeks and the move on to the next site so not very much moving.

3]  We have 2 small children [sorry meant dogs]. We are aware that this will limit us to the sites that we can go to.

4] Are there any special precautions/requirements when camping with dogs?

We would appreciate any comments and advice.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah & Lee Rom

I just want to welcome you to the Good Life of campers and to this Forum.  Your specific questions I am sure will be replied to by members with the required knowledge.  The question of dogs and camping has been discussed on this Forum many times before and you should have a look at these threads.  Just to a search and fill in 'dogs or  'pets' first in the one field and then in the other until you find what you need.  Hope to hear a lot from you.

Welcome Lee.

I am sure the Merc will tow the Palma with ease. In SA we underrate the capabilities of sedans as tow vehicles thinking it has to be a bakkie or SUV. Check that your drivers licence allows you to tow  caravan.

The general rules for dogs is they must not be allowed to roam around and on a leash when going for a walk. Remember to take  the poop scoop with.

Dogs will limit your choice of caravan parks. Some only allow animals in low season so do your homework.

There are plenty of topics to be found here regarding long term camping.

All the best with your new venture.

The Happy Campers.

Hi there fellow camper, enjoy camping.

Hi All

Glad to be able to join, Total newbie to caravanning , did a few overland trips a few years ago. We  bought an Explorer during lock down, now I don't know where to go, maiden voyage this coming weekend to a dam but dying for some isolation with the family and the well stocked van.

I know you all have a favourite so looking forward to some suggestions.

Tweedens getalle.

Reuke.

It is not how old one is that matters, it is how one is old that matters. One do not stop playing because one is old – one is old because one stopped playing.

Aangesien ek nie n hengelaar is nie kom ek nooit by dam oorde nie
