This could get interesting if it has not been covered before.

My wife work for a doctor and I used to be a Medic in the army plus a part time fireman so we probably have the most comprehensive (translate to overkill) stocked first aid boxes ever. From a vast range of pills of just about any ailment, plasters, eye drops, bandages, stuff for burns, anti septic, splints to even stiches but no local anaesthetic (not sure who will be that brave). In my opinion some plasters, headache pills, stomach pills, anti septic, burn ointment and emergency bandages should be adequate and cover most camp related injuries.

We do not have a proper first aid kit, such as a pharmacist would give you.  But we do have a big variety of tablets, medicines and ointments for just about every ache and pain, constipation, running tummy, flu, sore throat, sinus, sore muscles, insect bites, burns, heartburn, plasters, cramps, vicks, vaseline, eye drops, nasal spray,   But we are not prepared for a real emergency situation.

Many years ago, my late husband got a proper medical kit, it was a huge case with many things in it that we did not even know what all of it was for.   We went to visit a farmer on a farm in Calitzdorp.  Whilst there his son was driving  a bakkie with a few of the workers' children at the back.  One of the boys fell off the bakkie and hit his head on a big stone.  His head was cut open and we could see his skull and it was bleeding very badly.  We fetched the first aid kit and I frantically went through the contents.  Found a tin with a foam spray nozzle for big cuts and started spraying this foam all over his head.  An ambulance fetched him and took him to hospital.  A few days later the farmer's wife phoned me and told me the doctor said that stuff I sprayed on his head, saved that boy's life.

Every 2-3 years we buy new first aid kits and then use all the plasters and eye drops.

When we need the pills they had already expired. So off to buy new kits.  We seldom use the bandages and have plenty in stock.

I line with Freda, Who really knows how to use all the 'stuff' in our fancy kits?

I don't! Maybe some first aid training is due.

And ja, Jan, most of our pills have expired as well.

Like Pietl, I am also an ex army medic. I am rigged quite well, but not as good as him.

We have the basic kits in our cars the caravan the bushtrailer and in the house. These have stuff to cover the basic needs, cuts; scrapes; bruses; head aches etc etc. then I have a comprehensive kit with much more, bandages; splints; scalples; tweesers.

The big thing to remember, do not use expired medicins, tablets, ointments, eyedrops, eardrops that have expired can cause alergic / anaphalactic reactions.  I ended up in hospital for a day due to taking expired pain meds that a friend of mine gave me, and I never checked the date.

Thanx for this topic. Inprocess to kit a tupperware holder with some medical stuff. Apart from the general pils and so on I have learned the following valueable input.

Check dates of medication and never use expired ones. Maybe have a medicin list with the expire dates on. Easy to check and to update when replaced.

Have a know how booklet available for certain general emergencys. So you know how to use certain bandages. No need to have stuff if you do not know how to use it.

Make sure the kit is suficient for the type of trip youre going on.

One thing Leon, maybe you or I don't know how to use some things yet, but maybe a medic or someone who does know is close by and those dingises could save a life.

However! How much 'stuff' can a person drag around.

It is true what you are saying, Steamer.  Your first aid kit may help other people.   We have, at times, camped with friends who do not even think about such a thing as medication.  Some people do not even think to pack pain tablets.  I have often had to hand out pain tablets, something for heartburn, rubs for sore muscles, plasters.

My vrou pak daai afdeling in. Sy vat BAIE goed saam. Daar is omtrent medikasie vir elke kwaal daarin. Die foto is min of meer wat saamgaan. Sy kon al heelwat mede kampers ook help wat nie medikasies saam het nie...net Desember alleen kon sy 4x medekampers help

Take most of the same which is mentioned above.
We also found a spray om plaster for burns ans cuts, I think.
Also take a number of condoms with which can be stretched to keep out infections from arms/fingers/toes/foot/hands after putting on the required disinfectant creams, etc.
Condoms can then also be used for carring emergency water if you are stranded and need to walk out of a situation. I only have a 2 litre water bladder, so this can be topped up from the condoms and emergency rations in a run bag. Even have very light tent and small light sleeping bag.
The pills and perishables get used as needed during and after each trip for family at home and what is short or expired get replenished witt each trip/outing.

True what you say John. But I plan to have a small container with just the essentials.

Dalk iets net groter as 'n kosblik.  Grootste verband daar in sal gelykstaande wees aan 'n Arny persoonlike bom verband.

My lysie bestaan uit die volgende:

1. Pyn pille vir kopseer of so.  2. Imodiums/Jamaica Gemmer vir die maag.  3. Gaviscon / Rennies vir Oom Sooibrand.  4.  Neus sproei vir 'n sinus aanval of wat.  5. 9. Botteltjie amoniak/handy andy vir daai perdeby of blou blasie steke.  10  Twee of drie dun spuitnaalde vir dorings of splinters werk beter as werksnaald.  11. Skêrtjie.  12. Tweezer.  13. Een klein bom verband.

Wat dink julle mis ek? Wat dink julle is oorbodig?

Leon jy is in die kol. Ek het sommer by Dischem hulle medium groote 1st aid sakkies gekoop.

Warren kap jy nog jou vingers raak as jy penne in slaan?

Ek het 'n voorstel, kap eers al die penne in voordat jy daai eerste lafenissie vat, dan kry mens gewoonlik nie daai bloed blase onder die naal nie.

Ha Ha ha.
