I bought this WJ Motorhome in December of 2017 and have spent many hours lovingly upgrading it  to provide all the facilities that my wife and I require.

Some of the mods are : 15" wheels and extra wide tyres ( original 14" were not that impressive). This has raised the RV by almost 1.5" and has improved overall stability.

Roadhog spring assists installed. No more rear end sag. Spare wheel removed from underneath and new rear compartment added, by professional workshop.

5 x 100Watt Solar panels, with charge controller, 5 x 110Va Deep Cycle batteries and a 6Kva inverter installed. New HD clutch installed by professionals, Professionally treated underbody, new water pumps, new large fridge, microwave and electric geyser, along with 220v Stove/oven ( the gas installation was dangerous and I made a decision to remove everything, which went along with my wife's inborn fear of gas stoves ).

All LED lighting installed, entire RV re-wired with a professional relay unit in protection housing fitted underneath at rear. New Petrol inlet hoses and fittings installed. All new plumbing ( professionally installed).

Interior basically maintained as standard, with floor mounted table, rear double bed and serviced bathroom, shower and toilet facilities.

Good project and 90% of the work undertaken myself, except where professionals are mentioned.

Have taken 2 x 3 week vacations and have really enjoyed the times spent at the coast and in the bushveld.

Thanks for the kind wishes; we are indeed looking to spend many months away from home in 2019.

The list of improvements is too long for me to mention all, but just a few that I forgot to include are :

New front discs and pads. New front wheel bearings,

'Smart ' battery chargers ' external shower, All holding tanks outlet valves overhauled and re-sealed. LED Vehicle headlights, with 550watt Lightbar.

I do have one problem that I would ask for advice: the 3 level indicators for the 3 tanks are all faulty. As a retired Instrument Engineer, I can come up with a professional solution, but at a massive cost. I looked at the level sensors and indicators in Australia 2 months ago and although pretty good, they too are very costly. Even the items on E Bay are dear.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

Charles

I do not know what the level indicators in your van looks like.  Those that are used in the Jurgens Classique and the Exclusive are not very accurated but at least give an indication on how you stand with the water.

They are simple in operation and gets power from a small 9V remote battery inside the small square meter. It only works when you push the button and the the light will light up indicating the level in the tank.

You soon discover how much water is available with the level of the lights. Available at Camp world.

Charles, I installed a 25 liter water tank in my previous Sprite situated inside of the front bunk from bits and pieces but it worked well.  The tank was black plastic so that you could not see the level of the water.  For a level indicator I used a transparent plastic pipe to the  battery box connected to the tank in which the water stayed on the same level as the tank's. With calibrated markings, it was quite accurate if the van stood level and there was nothing that could fail, except perhaps the pipe itself which could have grown opaque in time.  Replacing this would have cost very little, the same price as the about a meter of 12mm plastic pipe which in fact was the whole "gauge".  I don't suppose you would use something as simple and unelegent as this, but I believe in the simplest possible solution for any problem.

Thank you Fred and Leon,

I will look at CampWorld for the level transmitters. What I have seen so far has not been value for money however.

The concept of an external clear plastic pipe on the outside of a tank is a good and simple solution; that is, if the tank is not hidden underneath, out of site. Great pity as this is the cheapest and most reliable method.

regards,

Charles

I need 3 units, so the price is quite high.
I have already spent >R105k on improvement on this motorhome however, so a few more won't really hurt.

Charles, The visablr part of the pipe need not be near the tank- you only need to be able to reach the tank once to connect the pipe which can be lead to any convenient place as long as the visable or gauge part is on more or less the same level as the tank and be able cover both lowest and highest levels of the tank.  I was not really offering it as a solution, although I am not jealous of this quite logical solution, but tried to show that simple cheap solutions can often work.  I am also using the same system to indicate the level of my rain water tank.

Ouch that could be pricey for three tanks.

What about a balancing pipe between the three and only install the gauge on the lowest one.

Only an idea....................

Unfortunately, the 3 tanks are : 1. Freshwater, 2 GreyWater ( from the shower, handbasin and sink) and 3. Blackwater from the toilet. Not possible to connect the 3.

Dankie Chuck, ons sal seker goei diens kry van die RV.

Vir my was dit nie 'werk' nie om die unit te herbou; liewers 'n geleendheid om myself besig te hou met 'n waardevolle projek.

Vir my is dit "Time well spent"

Charles can you get to the top of the tanks to put in a flat holder of like 5 probes made from brazing rods. This can be wired to a quad OP amp IC using 4 volt comparators to drive LEDS. That is what I did and used the top and bottom inputs to a buzzer for an alarm with switch if one cannot attent to it immediately.

Thank you Danie,

nice solution.

My problem is that all 3 tanks are mounted directly under the RV floor and the tops are not accesible.

Vorentoe gebring n.a.v Paul se vraag oor die tank buddy. Hierdie is 'n ander oplossing deur bv 3 probes te gebruik. 5 probes kan vir mens 'n oulike 1/4   1/2   3/4  of vol aanduiding gee.

Believe it or not, I sold the motorhome as my wife was not happy about riding on the back of a Vespa Scooter, which I carried on a specially designed and fabricated fold down rack mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

I have subsequently invested in a Wilk Topaz caravan and have made significant improvements. We are now on our way to the coast for a well earned holiday.

Yellow Sands, near Port Alfred, then Kenton on sea, Jeffreys Bay and on to Cape Town.

8 weeks glorious camping.

God bless all,

Charles

Charles sorry to hear that SWAMBO did not enjoy the scooter riding. In my case my wife also just decided on a day she does not want to be on a m-cycle. Before she used to enjoy riding with me. An interesting thing was how a family member had his m-cycle sold before he even knew what was going on. That's how he ended riding a m-cycle.

Enjoy your travels with the Topaz.

Hi Danie,

thanks for the input; I suppose at the end of the day, the lady of the house gets her way, one way or another.

Sad that your bike was sold.

We certainly do intend enjoying the Topaz.

Kind regards,

Charles

This was the final result of my labors.

I retained the Vespa along with the trailer; neither used any longer and looking for good homes along with an Oztrail Chateau 10 Beautiful tent c/w sewn in groundsheet ( no scavengers can get in underneath)

Kind regards to all,

Charles
