Having received the license disk for my new to me boat, according to which the gvm of the boat trailer is 2.5ton, i did some checks and found that there are only a limited number of vehicles that can legally tow (tare mass more than 2.5t) this trailer.

most of the vehicles claimed to be able to tow 3t and more weighs less than 2.5t, meaning that in manufacturers strive to save weight in attempt to make vehicles using less fuel, it actually disadvantage those who tow heavy loads. Some of these include the Touareg, post 2013 Range Rover big body and sport, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and most if not all of the bakkies.

Thus people will most probably be limited to the Disco4, pre-2013 range rovers, Mercedes GL and Audi Q7 v12

its actually quite a sobering fact that there could be some of us using the manufacturers claims on which we base our buying decisions only to find out that we were misinformed

be safe

Forgot to say that the list of cars that can legally tow over 2.5ton is just a few examples.

Thanks for the reminder.

However I'm not too sure that I would want to tow something that is as heavy or heavier than the tow vehicle. I towed the boat (boat and trailer weight -2.4t) with vehicle [(tare weight - 2.6t - 3 people with very little luggage)] from George to Pretoria. Between Uniondale and Graaff Reinet there was quite a strong wind and one could actually feel the boat whereas when I towed an Exclusive caravan last year to and from Hartenbos, (guessing it weighed a bit less) was easier (in similar windy conditions).

I prefer that my vehicles be at least 10% heavier than the trailer/caravan that I tow to reduce the possibility that the "tail wags the dog".

Thats why I started looking at the vehicles as Im due a change in vehicle hopefully in the next year or so.

The problem is the SA law, many of the later bakkies for example can tow 3500kg (Hilux, Ranger, etc.) and in Oz they actually do. Here the lwa limits you to the tarre of the vehicle, e.g. 2118kg in my Ranger's case. Then of course the little issue of GCM also kicks in....

Here's a strange one!
My LC 80's licence disc says Tare: 2160 kg and GVM: 0 kg.
Obviously a mistake, but how do I rectify it?
Nowhere on the registration certificate does it say what the GVM should be.

Most Land Rovers can tow up to 3.5 tons.

I don't believe that will include the smaller Freelander models

The Freelander 1 can tow 2000kg as per the manufacturer but then you are foul of the law that limits you to the tare which is about 1550kg.

Porsche Cayenne

According to Porsche's website the Cayenne "only" weighs 2185kg which is less than 2.5t. The 2011 and later Touareg weighs more or less the same

Btw, I went to test drive a new vehicle a few weeks ago at a franchised dealership and had a good chat with the salesman who assisted me.

He admitted that he was not up to date with the tow regulations in SA; what impressed me was that he was willing to listen to an old goat like me regarding the tow regulations. In addition he also undertook to make sure he get hold of the regulations to ensure that he can give his prospective clients the correct information.

The GVM of the Porsche Cayenne E1 os 3080kg and the GVM of the Cayenne E2(new shape) is 2870kg.

Do we not look at the GVM?

It seems like the Cayenne has a tare of about 2200kg and lower than the 2500kg needed. Even the MB GL500 (2445), Prado(2355) and Hummer (2299) has a tare of below 2500kg.

It seems the Audi Q7 with a tare of 2450kg would also not make it without adding service brakes as WilSur indicated.

Volgens wat ek kon sien is dit net die Cruiser 200 wat 'n tare van meer as 2500kg het.
