It would seem the tare could be 1400kg with the kerb 1458kg. This table gives it as 1400kg.

Taking into account what Danie said it would means according to traffic regulation your cannot tow more that that Tarra weight of the vehicle.

But that is not what the manufacturer spec says.  You will have to search for the identification plate on the vehicle. There you will find 4x weights specified.  First one the heaviest of all is the Gross Combined Mass (GCM) example 6000kg. The second heaviest is the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) example 4200kg. The other two are the front and rear axle loads.

All you do is subtract the GVM from the GCM indicated on that plate and that will give you an indication on how much that vehicle can tow. In the example above 6000kg (GCM) - 4200kg (GVM) = 1800kg (mass you are alloud to tow).  Take note then that the GVM of the trailer must not exceed this weight.

These calculations are also used if you are pulled off at a weigh bridge to check if you are within the law.

Hope the info helps.

Towing capacity of 1400kg for a 81kw 155Nm sounds too heavy

@ Leon - But that is not what the manufacturer spec says.  You will have to search for the identification plate on the vehicle. The other two are the front and rear axle loads.

If you don't own the vehicle yet one can only look for information. The 1600 panel van the specs from VW gives the GCM as 2700kg. It also gives a payload of 625kg and with it a braked 1000kg towable. GVM is indicated as 1700kg. Roof load is 70kg.

These figures can be an indication as the tare of the panel van will be about 325kg lighter than the crew bus.

I would hope that the figures I quoted were correctly supplied as from the manufacturer as per the figures in my 1st picture.

@Geert - I agree with only 155Nm to tow 1400kg would not be comfortable but that weight could be from VW and it is as per the local laws based on the tare of the Crew Bus at 1400kg.

Cars weìght and body may be ok for towing but that little engin will suffer if towing more than 1000kg. Take mountain passes and wind into consideration and you will be "going slowly" everywhere. 81 kw will be at 5000+ rpm. Nobody want to drive at that revs long distance.
