I was there January 2018. Basically the best place to stay to visit Kosi Bay, if you are prepared for the lodge service.

The two managers are very friendly most the time but the most uninformative I have ever come accross. I made sure I can go see turtles laying eggs while staying there. I arrive, when can I go I ask I think Kenny, cant remember the name. No ask the other manager Enock, he is back tommorrow. Ask tomorrow, no he is not back yet, four days in a row I get told he will be back tomorrow and the other guy can not help me. Eventually on the last night he says we can go tonight, report at the office at a certain time in the evening. Then you get informed it is many hours drive through the bush to get to the right beach, and you get back very late, and at such short notice you cant not arrange a evening meal.

We also wanted to go on a boat ride on the lakes, yes, just book at the office, but there never is someone in the office, and when you find someone, he says it is to late now to get the guy that runs the boats. Eventually you gang up a few fellow clients, and insist on getting a boat trip organised. Then he phones the boat guy and ask if he has space on the boat. Yes he has, it leaves in an hours time, and then you get told it is a 45 minute drive to get to the launch site! But the boat ride and guide was one of the highlights.

I also paid high season rates, but did not get generator in the morning as stated, only evenings. And in the evening only emregencies get attended to no one to ask gnerator questions to.

They have large freezers, but they are only for the use of room clients, but standing empty most the time. I just sneaked frozen meat into them while there.

You also have to get a daily permit to go to the beach, very deep sand and and even Land Cruisers get stuck in places. there is very good snorkeling inside the bay, but they do not tell you the only time the current is not to strong is change of tide time mid morning. And there are 'locals' that can paddle you accross of you do not want to walk through fairly deep water. Ask them where is the good snorkeling spot.

The camp itself is ok, if you get a stand with trees, that is if you take a camp or caravan site.

There is a bar in the camp, not much else, make sure you find out where the Spar at the nearest town is if you want some supplies.

Not much other places to stay close by, except some camps with no facilities and very long sand track drives. So go to Utshwayelo, but be assetive ;-)

we have camped sevral times at the parks board camp on the banks of 3rd lake, prehaps more suitable for an off road caravan or trailer. however we camped in a tent as we towed a boat, very nice camp site, clean abolutions quite and peaceful. we did look into the campsite you mentioned and on the onset the describtion above is probaly suitable.a boat is needed to explore the 3 lakes and a 4x4 is needed to get to the mouth, the fish stocks in the lakes have been depleted so much so that we no longer go there, snorkling is good at the mouth but you dont want to be the only one down there, we never experienced any problems on any of our trips there , however we were always extremly aware of our surroundings , bhange nek just south of the lakes has two campsites [ primitive but nice ] and a realy pristine stretch of beach, [ realy good surf fishing ] but again a good 4x4 is needed.
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Thanks for all the feedback, the time is getting closer now and we are very excited! I must also say that it has been a struggle getting information out of the management there, I basically googled on every other site for Kosi bay to get the info I wanted and then confirm it with them. In my opinion they can definitely send out an info sheet with booking queries.

We will be driving with our 4x2 Fortuner with a diff lock and we are hoping not to get stuck in the sand roads, especially the road to the mouth. Just for incase we got the Grip n Go recovery tracks. If nothing else I am sure this will be an exciting adventure for us.

I want to go on the boat ride myself and will make sure the find out in advance when where and how. Also looking forward to the snorkeling.

Any more advice and/or tips will be most welcome!

I wil be sure to give some feedback after we have visited.

hi tanya, on all our past excusions to kosi bay we encounted a closed gate at the top of the hill before the road decends down to the mouth, a gaurd at the gate will check your vechile, if it does not look like or say 4x4 on the vechile he will not open the gate. the rain fall at this time of the year in that area catches out even the real mc coys on that road, a low range is a must. however the boat launch area is on 3rd lake which is about a 30 minite drive from your campsite , mostly tar and the sandy sections will not be a problem for your vechile. a boat trip is a must to explore the lakes, you will no doubt be in total awe at what surrounds you on that trip, remember, be aware of your surroundings at all times both stationary and whilst on the move, its going to be an adventure alright.

Hi George

Thanks for the heads up. I see they do transfers to the mouth but it's a bit pricey. Also read that it's about 45 minutes walk to the mouth but with 4 kids of which 2 are ages 9 and 7 I don't think that will work.

When you say to be aware of your surroundings what are you referring to? It's making me a bit nervous lol.

I do not know the area that well. Closest if been was in Ponta D Oro before the tar road and that was a sandy trip.

If I look at what George is saying you are going to have difficulty towing your caravan there only with difflock and no 4x4.  I would suggest you only go with tents and gazebos.

This is surely a place I would like to visit in the rear future.

As per the management and the website the roads to the lodge are mostly tarred and in a good condition and we shouldn't have any problems getting there. I have also seen other campers that went there with Caravans.

Its the road to the mouth I'm worried about. Worst case scenario we will get a transfer or walk lol

I'll give them a call tomorrow just to be sure.

tanya , you are going to a corner of the country thats a stone throw away from the moz border and you are driving a toyota,  having a hightened sense of your surroundings is prevention which is better then cure, its not the locals you need be concerned about, they are a friendly bunch, its those moz okes that hop the border that is the trouble, two trips back i prevented a potental hi jacking just by paying attention to what was going on around me. and i dont even drive a toyota,

dont be put of , its a realy great place, just be alert

tanya, the road to utshwayelo is mostly tarr, just the last approx 4kms will be gravel [ not sand ] and will not be a problem for your rig. last but not least, sign posting is not one of kosi bays forte, a gps with correct co ordinates will be an avantage.

Hi julle

Ek hoop julle sal my kan vergewe.

Ons trippie Kosi baai toe was in een woord ... asemrowend!

My hart verlang na Kosi baai.
