Good morning members of the forum, I would like to know the road conditions from Pretoria to Badplaas. We plan to enter Swaziland at Oshoek and find a Caravan Park with power and security for several days.

From there we want to go to the Game Parks, plus interasting places. Our route will then be Golela, Mkhuze, Kosi Bay, Temba Elephant Park, Kosi Lakes, Sodwan, Cape Vidal, St Lucia, Richards Bay, Then to cut acctoss at Stanger, Greytown, Lady Smith to Drakens Ville and Back.

Our worrys are the road conditions in Swaziland and the Caravan Park with power. We traveled this rout 20 years ago so the South African roads are also a big worry.

If you have done sections of the rout this could also be a big help.

If any one would like to join, they would be welcome.

Our time frame is plus minus 30 days, October after the school hollydays.

can give you imformation from golela, we have camped often at jozini [ tent ] with the ski boat , most times good tiger fishing. roads ok to not bad onto mkhuze , road from jozini to kosi bay also ok, have towed the ski boat to kosi bay lakes often, although you wont get down to the lakes campsite with a road caravan, we again camp with a tent, a 4x4 is needed to explore the kosi bay area. road back to sodwana ok, have camped there often [ tent ] and launched the boat there. monkeys a major problem there . st lucia to cape vidal is through a game reserve roads ok. on to richards bay all good, stanger to greytown not sure , havnt been that way for many years , roads to and from ladysmith all good

two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

From Pta on N4 to Machodorp then to Badplaas. Carolina to Badplaas is great but not sure about the Badplaas to Lochiel portion on the way to Oshoek. Carolina via Warburton to Oshoek is also in good condition the time I used it.

By Phinda Sihlongonyane - SWAZI OBSERVER-10-May-2010

FINES for traffic offences have been increased tremendously – in most cases by 150%.

Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ntuthuko Dlamini said the increase was a result of a process which started in 2006. Jaywalkers who were all along liable to a E60 fine, will now have to pay E200 for their misdeeds.

Admission of guilt also goes up from E60 to E200. Not fastening your seatbelt will also cost E200 from E60 as well.

The minister said the fines to be implemented under the Road Traffic Act, would come into effect soon. The minister explained that in 2006, the fines could not be increased because at the time bus fares were increased and government did not want people to face two increases at the same time. The minister said this was one issue that he found on the table when he came into office.

We are in the process of reviewing the fines and will soon be submitting the new schedule to the relevant authorities for approval.” He said a major shift was expected to occur once the new fines were implemented. Dlamini, the LaMgabhi Member of Parliament said there had been an increase in drink driving offences which had necessitated the need to speed up the process to deter people from doing so.

He said the fine for drink driving was E2 000 but is set to increase to E5 000 The minister said these also include reckless driving, negligent driving, jay walking and not respecting road signs. He said since the country now had highways, drivers would be fined from E500 or more for driving slowly on the fast lane.

He said not fastening a seat belt would bear a fine of E500. due to the increase in overloading by public transport operators, he said, this would now be considered as a criminal offence that would go with a huge fine.

“Overloading will now be considered as a serious offence as there is an increase in accidents resulting from over loading.”

I would rather go via Amsterdam to Piet Retief and then Pongola. There you have a few good and reasonably priced places to stay over. Roads are very good

Hi Roger.

I doubt it is of much interest to Roger to list some routes around Swaziland. He would like to camp inside SD and explore whatever is to be seen. Much safer from what one can gather but try to avoid going through Oshoek at peak times as the wait to get through can be very long. Up to 3 hours at times.

Thus there are 2 routes to be used to get to Oshoek from Badplaas as indicated earlier. A friend of mine in Badplaas indicated that the potholes on the Lochiel road have been fixed and he is not aware of people complaining about it but has not used in in the last 6 months.

SD has lots to offer in a very friendly country and worth a visit. Also nice to travel through the forests after Manzini. I wonder why is the great Mlilwane Game Reserve always decribed as outside Mbabane while in fact it is closer to Manzini?

Suiker was destyds baie goedkoper as in SA.

Recent trip to siteki from big bend revealed a road with multiple and massive potholes almost unpassable but for traveling at 10 kilos an hour and you will still jar your rig do not recommend mr 16 unless there have been repairs lately. Be warned!
