I recently purchased a Toyota Avensis 2.2D. The towing capacity is limited to 810kg. I have not yet towed with it. Has anyone towed with one and what are your observations? Regards Erik

Hi Erik, if you tow anything heavier as indicated, it will influence your waranty. But this car is strong and might make mince meat of towing if it was not for the manufacterer. What can you tow? small sprite or a venter?

What the manufacturer doesn't know don't hurt, as far as they know you tow the garden trailer. Check the load spec on the tow hitch, you should be able to tow any small & medium size van with ease. Have towed the weight of a Penta behind and although the vehicle towed with ease the use of a stabalizer was needed, & that was with a 95kg ball mass.

Irrespective of the manufacturer's warranty, more important are the following considerations: 1. Legal limits of a combination - to the best of my knowledge (stand to be corrected) the towed vehicle's (trailer/caravan/boat etc) gross mass may not exceed the tare mass of the vehicle doing the towing & 2. Should this legal regulation not be adhered to, you could end up on the losing end when insurance related matters come into question!! This on top of the manufacturers warranty could have you end up in deep trouble. HOWEVER, the most important bottom line is - is it "safety first" for you & your family as well as other road users to tow something you don't have full control over, even more so in an emergency situation?? Life is too precious to place at risk!!! (ALARA risk behaviour) Each one to decide for himself, but also to live with the decision and its consequences!!!! My 2c worth!!
