I am experiencing that more often than not one ends up on a camping site where the ground is so hard that you battle to get the tent pegs into the ground. The past weekend we camped at Bass Lake and it was the hardest soil that I had even had to try and get tent pegs into. I always thought Kruger Park had hard ground, but boy!

I am seriously considering buying a cordless impact drill to drill into the hard ground where one wants to insert the tent pegs. Can those who have tried and tested this option please share their experience with regards to size/power of drill that has sufficient torque. And what diameter holes they drill for say, 5mm pegs?

We made ourselves a bunch of stainless pegs... They break rock! There is another person I know of that makes them as a hobby as well (not really the same though but good enough for hard ground). He advertises on Facebook camping sites regularly.

I have never ever ever again struggled with anything even stones hidden in the ground shatters 99% of the time. BUT, VERY important, stainless stays pretty straight, and comes out easily if pulled in the same line, so make sure what you anchor makes an angle that does not pull it out.

Like Flip and others I use a 850 watt electric drill.

To solve the problem of small stones falling back into the hole when extracting the bit I put the drill in reverse and pour water into the hole. The water gets sucked down and helps to keep the hole open till I get the peg in.
