I am experiencing that more often than not one ends up on a camping site where the ground is so hard that you battle to get the tent pegs into the ground. The past weekend we camped at Bass Lake and it was the hardest soil that I had even had to try and get tent pegs into. I always thought Kruger Park had hard ground, but boy!

I am seriously considering buying a cordless impact drill to drill into the hard ground where one wants to insert the tent pegs. Can those who have tried and tested this option please share their experience with regards to size/power of drill that has sufficient torque. And what diameter holes they drill for say, 5mm pegs?

I hear you. I have been lucky the last few years by not getting it that bad. That said it will be well worth it to see what " the old hands" have to say  and type of solutions they have.

STOP and smell the camp fire :)

750w electric hammer drill and 6 X 300 masonary bit do the trick for us.

I also had this problem in August in the Kruger. Just could not get that tent peg into the ground. With no drill available, I used my 10cm nails with washers welded at the end. The ones you buy and use for ground sheets. I found that if I cannot get a normal tent peg in, I use these nails. Before you hit the washer part flush with the ground, you turn the rope 2 or 3 times around the nail and then hit it into the ground. Interesting enough, the nail went into the ground fairly easy and worked just as well as the tent peg. Was also easier to remove than a normal tent peg.

When the ground is hard I use short pegs - about 10 cm. They seem to go in without bending.

Hulle is baie by military stores in Pta Wes.

Sterkte

I use 5mm pegs with the 6mm drill

If you use a 5mm drill, you still battle to get them in. Just remember the 45 degrees angle.

I used to use a 6mm x 300mm masonry drill bit with the 5mm tent peg.

Now I use 8mm screws with a 13mm head. I lengthen the screw to about 120mm and use my cordless drill to screw them into the ground, similar to how Louvan does his with short pegs - it works well for me.

Johan, do you first drill a hole before inserting the screws? Coach screws? And do you use a normal cordless drill or an impact drill?

Reinhardt. As jy harde grond wil sien maak n draai by Klipdraai.

As jy daar n verkeerde stand kry is jy in vir n ding.

No drilling beforehand. Not sure what coach screws are. I use a normal cordless drill, although I have found that my cordless does not have enough torque in some very hard ground, it is an 18v (~42Nm torque). Then I use my normal electric 810W drill.

Johan, coach screws are galvanised and have a hexagon head. They come in various lenths. I read about impact drill today which works well for driving in screws.

I made these out of 'T' bar, but ground the slots a bit deep, so if I really moer them, they bend at the slot.

They do work well.

Ek hou my ou penne as ek die dag verkoop. Gaan koop direk by die fabriek.

If you can not drive peg into ground, then tie ropes onto big rock , or big wood , or even standing next to tree then onto tree, or even to bakkie bumber if not riding around

Their pegs is actually good value for money. With their pegs I don't use storm nets or storm straps

So, indien Tentco nie by Maxcons koop nie, is dit 'n ander produk - my mening.

Hy is omtrent 35cm by 35cm.
