Swaying Mobi
Gents, please advise what the cause / problem can be?
When towing at 120kmh i sometimes have the Mobi swaying not excessively but flows to the Land Cruiser as well and have to reduce power.
Is there a general rule to tire inflation between Mobi tires and Cruiser?
Must stabilizers be put on or not?
Look forward to all the replies and TIA
Tommy
Firstly ensure that the tires are inflated properly "all side same side". Use the Land Cruiser specs usually found on a sticker in the door.
This inflation pressure can be copied to your Mobi lodge.
Then you should check the loading of the caravan. To much weight behind the wheels of the caravan could be the problem. Most of the storage of the Mobi-lodge is in the back wall of the caravan. That with the spare wheel at the back and whatever you put on the back is a lot of weight behind the wheels/ axle of the caravan. This also includes your fridge that is actually mounted behind the axle.
The only things that you really can move forward is, what ever you pack in the rear wall storage and the fridge. Yes the fridge has a dedicated spot but try moving it inline with the front door.
If you play around with the weight distribution you should resolve the stability issue. Well thats what I would have done. Then get a stabilizer for piece of mind.
Remember a stabilizer should not be used to counter an existing stability problem. First sort the problem then use a stabilizer for more security.

Thats great advice from Leon Would second what he has advised you to do. I would also never tow my van at that speed tho, even with the stabiliser.
Thanks Gents all info and advice taken and thanks for your time.
Happy camping.
I am towing a Exclusive with a Fanger bakkie and did experience some swing till I followed the advice from a forum member to pump all 8 tyres between 2,8 and 3 bar. After doing that, it was the end of swing
Does the tow vehicle when loaded and caravan hitched sit level or nose up........
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Tommy you do not tow a caravan at that speed. You are looking for trouble.

Well its every man for himself and what he does is his way of work or driving. I have towed my Penta numerous times to Dolphin Holiday Resort during the April holidays some years back. We left our home early in the morning and around sun up we would be in the area of Van Reenen's Pass.
That's when the "speedys" from the RAND would start to catch up on us and the speed they were towing their vans was really scary, family and all in the vehicle. And in the end when we reach Balito they were there at the resort about an hour before us, because they were still busy setting up camp. So you do not win that much time speeding.
My advice is also to reduce speed that would also bring about a bit more stability. But it's for your own decision.

Hi Tommy. You will also get a lot of advise at the Mobi Club rally at Dinokeng. Check how they pack their rigs.
Something else came to mind. Being a high van it could be an aerodynamic problem. My 2c.

It is like you say Hendrick. All other high profile caravans mostly has a flat front surface. The Mobi-Lodge has a pointed tip slicing the air with round curve to the top. Maybe this has an influence.
Although it the first time we hear from this. I still stand with my initial idea that its possibly a weight distribution thing.

Was the water tank full or empty, and where is it located? My 2c worth.
Living the dream
Had a simular issure when i got the triton a year back , first time we loaded it and hooked the exclusive on the back the front of the triton sat quite a bit higher in the front then at the back resulting in a very light steering , which in turn resulted in a very " nervous " rig on the road.
Never had this problem with the colt as it had a torsen bar suspension set up at the front where as the triton has coil springs.
A set of air helpers installed at the rear of the triton to bring the bakkie back level when loaded and hitched solved that problem.

Except for the Western Cape, our country is riddled with potholes.
How does one negotiate potholes at 120 whilst towing a caravan?
Normally the van is wider than the towing vehicle and its wheels are more exposed and likely to go in the pothole.
I have personal experience of a bent stub axle from hitting a pothole towing at 100 where I could safely swerve enough to miss the hole with the car, but not with the van.
If trucks with trailers are by law limited to 80 kph, I am wondering why caravans, which are much less stable than lean-to trailers, are allowed to travel at speeds deemed dangerous by the majority of caravan owners.
When towing responsible driver philosophy has always been to tow slow enough to be able to handle unforeseen circumstances.
It is not how old one is that matters, it is how one is old that matters. One do not stop playing because one is old, one is old because one stopped playing.
I have once camped at Struisbaai near a camper who was towing a Exclusive with and Audi Q7. This guy stated that his best towing speed is 140km/h. He gets the best fuel consumption at that speed and the van is tugging in nice behind the Audi.
When I stated my driving speed at 90 to 100, he said then he will never go that slow as he will not reach his destination going like a tortoise. I left the topic at that.
I quote from 1Pierre 2 above: "This guy stated that his best towing speed is 140km/h. He gets the best fuel consumption at that speed and the van is tugging in nice behind the Audi."
When I was a little boy my grandfather told us all sorts of stories. He especially liked the stories of Karel Groot Lieg. In the days when my old father was a front puller in the big pull, this character was apparently known for exaggerating just about every wildlife experience he had.
I can relate to a fib that will surely beat the above one of the Audi. We recently camped where a guy with a very long body double rear wheel axle VW panel van converted to a quasi motor home with a two-liter bi-turbo diesel engine, towing a luggage trailer, claimed that he can cruise at 170 kph, and that his fuel consumption bettered 11 kilometers per liter.
How is that for a Karel Groot Lieg story?
It is not how old one is that matters, it is how one is old that matters. One do not stop playing because one is old, one is old because one stopped playing.
All information taken thanks Guys -- dropped speed - made sure weight is not a problem - toed this past week and a bliss at 100km/h
Baie dankie aan almal

Tommy glad to hear the problem is sorted. Happy camping ðŸâÅ
