We have a Subaru Outback 2.5l automatic 2014 - looking to buy a secondhand van for around R60 000 for weekends away so not having to be big but must be practical. What suggestions from the seasoned caravanners out there please? Last owned a caravan in the '90's and loved it so that era is perfect for us almost pensioners - needs to be easy to push!

Automatic or CVT? Subaro tends to use CVT 'boxes....Some claim a CVT gearbox also is automatic but it works with steelbelts running between cone-shaped "rollers", generally CVT is bad news for towing these 'boxes are not lasting while towing and EXPENSIVE to fix (if you can find somebody to fix it in the first place...). If its a good old-fashioned automatic gearbox you should be good to tow, limits would be in the car's user handbook.

Thanks Hurricane. We also have an old Merc auto 320 1998 model - would that be a better tow car?

Or a Subaru Outback 3l H6 2001 auto - will check if it is true auto or not.

New to caravaning, but the single thing that I do not like is the width.

I have a Penta and that thing is 1,3m wide. Makes it extremely difficult to see who or what is behind you.

A van that is 1.1m or even 1,2m wide makes a huge diffrence when towing :)

I would think that either of the vehicle would be trusty tow vehicles that is if the auto box of the subaru is the conventional one. (I have no info with regards to Jorg's input)

Caravan???????? I would say you can tow anything in the weight area of a Jurgens Fleetline and smaller. There are other threads that explains much about the Tara and GVM of tow vehicle and caravans. Follow that and you should be fine.

The ideal caravan would probably be a Jurgens Classique as you talk about almost pensioners. This is a two sleeper single axle with full bathroom. A bit heavy for easily pushing around but if you install a mover you can take her anywhere while sitting on a chair and push a button.

You will have to check if  any of your vehicle could tow it legally.

Goeiemôre Ed Visser,

Gaan loer bietjie weer na die breedte van jou Penta waarna jy hierbo verwys.

As dit regtig 1,3m wyd is soos jy hier op skrif stel het jy 'n unieke wa.

Na my mening is alle JURGENS waens 2.3 meter wyd volgens hulle spesifikasies.

I would go for the Skipper Oyster , they are light to tow ,stable in windy conditions easy to set up , ideal for two people but are scarce to buy second hand.

Welcome here Janet. I think it would be best to go and look at a few caravans and see what you find you can easily move. The problem will always be when you on sand or grass then it might become a problem.

Also I belief one will have to look around as there are so many shapes and sizes and it will be to suit your taste. Bush type - tar road - with or without pop-up roof.
