Scissor jack is usually more suited to lifting a vehicle from a higher vantage point, although a 4 ton hydraulic jack is probably higher than the 2 ton hydraulic jack i have for my Skipper. Would have to have bricks under it to lift the car on its jacking points.

There is a trade off for this type of thing.  On a normal vehicle (Plat kar) you will have difficulty to fit a bottle jack under.  This is even applicable to most caravans when a wheel is flat.

Then even on some higher vehicles like a Bakkie or SUV you will even have problems fitting a bottle jack there as the best lifting point is under the axle or strong part of the chassis when a tyre is flat.

Yes I am all for a bottle jack but the shorter, thicker/fatter ones as they usually will fit under the bakkie and also comes with an extention that turns out on the jack shaft to compensate for height differences.

Best is to let the air out of the front and rear tyres to determine what is the height available under the jack point before you go and buy any other jack.

To me however the ideal jack is one of two:

  • The mechanical jack in the shape of a bottle jack that works of a screw which is turned and that turn the center part out in two stages.
  • The other is a hydraulic trolley jack but it has limited height.

I have a hydraulic trolley jack in the bakkie, which works well. It is however impractical if you have a space problem. It is also heavy, so it is only really an option for bakkie owners.

As I very seldom have to lift a vehicle along the road- haven't had to do that in years- the standard scissor jack is quite adequate and is is neatly housed in a dedicated space.  It also works well on the caravan, should that become necessary. At home, where I do more lifting to for instance rotate wheels, I have a trolley jack which is easier to handle and quicker in lifting the vehicle.  Do not forget to use reliable supports especially if you have to get under the vehicle- a collapsing jack is sure to kill you.

Ek is hulp aangebied en n vriendelike Hilux man het my sy bottle jack geoffer.

I had a bottle jack for my Sprite Swing, but never had to use it until the other day. I had to take my wheels off to have new tires fitted. I discovered, with disgust that I could not lift the caravan high enough to get the wheel off the ground. Even with the screw top almost fully extended I just managed, with difficulty, to get the wheel off. I immediately went and bought a scissors jack, problem solved!

Incidentally, I had my caravan serviced by a reputable place in Pretoria about two months ago. When I tried to take my wheels off I found the bolts so tight that the normal tire brace could not loosen them. I tried a torque wrench with a socket and the socket broke. I then went back to the tire brace and fitted a metal pipe about 50cms long. After literally jumping on the pipe I finally got the bolt loose. I had to repeat the performance on all the bolts. I phoned the place that had serviced my van and the workshop manager assured me that their torque wrenches are set at 105nm. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had had a flat somewhere between 'erens en nerens'.

Andre, those threads will now be stretched and possibly work loose. (maybe, maybe not)

Once I watched the idiot at TWT use a torque wrench on my wheels and when it clicked, he still forced it another half turn.

He got quite offended when I gave him a lecture on how to use a torque wrench.

I always loosen & re-torque when I get home.
