Hi, we are thinking of going to Spioenkop Nature Reserve. Has anyone been caravanning there recently? We would appreciate your feedback.

Was there about  two years ago to take a look only as i was staying at Dragon Peaks, the camp is along side the lake, no definite stands marked out and no perimeter fence either. The ablutions were basic and not like those found in other parks, it has game on the reserve including rhino so you could find a rhino in your tent at night.  the only security is that at the gate entrance to the park otherwise you all on your own in the camp area. Must be very lonely when on your own in the camping area and we felt one would not be to secure there when alone.

nothing else to do other than game viewing in the park, it is however,  close to the battlefields and not to far from the Drakensberg central.

As i say all this was 2 years ago and things may have changed since then

Hi Graham, thanks for this information, we will rethink our plans, as we had planned to be there mid-week, so I would assume, we would be alone. Not so great.

Hi Flintstone,

if you look at Brians connection above, in the gallery, the ablution is behind the one caravans tent and the pictures of the dam is the one you camp at.

so if you do go - camp close to the ablutions as you might find yourself in a 100 m sprint with a rhino in the middle of the night and depending which way you going, that could be a big problem.
