Hi to all forum members. In April we did a trip to the Southern Drakensberg (Underberg) area and KZN south coast (Port Edward) as we have not been to these areas in the past 20 years. This is our feedback;
The N1/N3 from Centurion to Howick was an easy drive on good highways and lots of places to stop for eating, toilets and fuel. Tried out the etag and did not have to que at the toll booths. The road from Howick to Underberg R617 is in good condition with some potholes in places. After Underberg we took the second turnoff to the right (marked as D2) to Silverstreams Caravan Park - 33km of fair to poor gravel road. Personally I would avoid this type of road in a standard caravan. We travelled at a maximum of 40kph on the better stretches after deflating all the tyres to 1.8 bar. From Silverstreams to TO Strand (Port Edward) we followed the R617 to Kokstad then N2 to Port Shepstone then R61 to Port Edward. The R617 to Kokstad is very quiet and in generally good condition. Kokstad's Engen is the only place to stop for eating, toilet and fuel. The N2 to Port Shepstone is a very busy road with a lot of big trucks - it's recently upgraded and very good condition - the last section is through densely populated areas with low speeds and lots of speed traps. From Port Edward to Durban was on the N2 - very good condition. Durban to Centurion was a pleasure again on the N3/N1.
We have provided Resort Feedback for Silverstreams, TO Strand and Queensburgh Resort and posted the following photos.
Best regards and happy camping, Pat
Thanks for the update and great photos Pat.
Pity about the long stretch of gravel road to Silverstreams. We would have liked to camp there.
We once stayed at a guest farm close to the Mzinkulu River. Had to stay a day longer as the road was impassible after heavy rain.
See you from the Eastern Cape area - just a question - have you been to or do you known the road conditions to Coffee Bay, Mdumbi, Port St Johns. The last time I was in this area was 1974 as a teenager- the roads were not too bad - but the beaches were beautiful. Looking at doing a trip to this area sometime in the future.
Best regards Pat
