Hi, all. I considering to buy a Skipper torpedo.  I am making my decision based on the fact that it is quite light weight.  My only concern is that my nissan hardbody 2.0 16v might be to weak to tow it. Any comments on this? I thing the torpedo weighs 580kg.

"Welcome" to the CP forum.

Do not concern about the weakness of your Nissan.

My friend has a Sprite Splash and tow that with ease with his Nissan Hardbody, 2lt 16 V.

My brother in law has a 16 valve, 2lt KIA and used to tow his Sprite Super Sport with ease.

Currently, he bought himself a Sprite Swift and tow it as when you tow a Venter trailer.

The estimate weights: Sprite Splash = 1,0 T.

Sprite Super Sport = 950 kg

Sprite Swift = 680 kg.

  • The abovementioned is, unladen.

Thanks for that reply. I was worried, as the Nissan 2.0 16V, torque peak sits quite high.

I have not ever towed anything with it.  If all works out, i will buy the Skipper and start camping... I am lucky to be close to many caravan parks, like Bazely, and i have no mountain passes to cross.  I have hust had a new clutch kit installed so that should be good.

Go for it and go camping and enjoy the outdoor's.

You have nothing to be worried off.

I used to tow my Swift with a GWM Steed, 2.2-8 valve and had no problem.

With the X-Trail Dci, is like a Sunday drive.

Jan, I am not sure whether the 580 kg you mention is the empty or loaded weight, but I would guess it is the allowable loaded mass.  My Skipper Oyster's allowed loaded mass is 650Kg and it looks much like the Torpedo.  This is more or less the same as a loaded 6 foot Venter trailer which you can tow with just about any car. An advantage of your tow vehicle is that it is quite high (do you have a canopy?) and therefore there is less wind resistance on your van. Wind resistance on a level road is a much bigger factor that the van's mass. With my Skipper-Kuga diesel combination, I get around 7.5l/100 kilos on the highveld according to my on board computer at a 100 k's with about a liter extra at the coast, so clearly the car does not battle to tow the Skipper. Do let us know what you decide and your experience.

Hi, Fred. Thanks for the info. You do not mention your vehicle make and engine type.  I do have a canopy on my bakkie, so i suppose the Skipper will

run in the slipstream of hthe bakkie, reducing any possible drag effect. I think the Torpedo is the father of the Oyster. I am going for it, as it is still in a good nick and i am now convinced that i will be able to tow it. :)

I will post some fotos when i get it.

Goeiemiddag Willem,

Jan, It is a 2l Kuga diesel AWD with 120 Kw and 340 Nm. Bu for the Skipper, this is very much an overkill. A 60Kw 1400cc petrol car will do just fine.

I have Nissan 2.4 12v, ( 88 KW & 189nm torque) I tow my XT65  trailer easily. I know those bakkies are under powered and bit thirsty. You will easily tow in 5th gear and worst case 3rd gear going on steep climb . Your bakkie will do the job.

One thing I learnt with camping, you don’t need a powerful car/ 4x4 to camp , just go and enjoy the outdoors.

Thanks for the advice. I also like the fact that the skipper Torpedo has run in brakes. Never had this before on a trailer. Does it work well? My Nissan has no abs so i need to take breaking withbextra weight at the back, into consideration.

the golden rule with hard braking when towing is straight tyres when braking,  if not it will jack knife .

No problem you just need to drive and brake as normal. After a while you will get to know the run in brakes and how to use it to your advantage.
