I am in love with this camp.  As soon as summer gets to SA we are heading back, it is by far the most exquisite place we have found in SA, not just the camp but the entire park. We spent an entire afternoon exploring the Park.  The rivers while mostly empty were so beautiful, the fishing dam was just lovely and my kids spent a good few hours exploring the streams and pathways.

The Mahai River Camp is beyond gorgeous.  The trees almost touch the sky the sites are HUGE, grassed and shady and I can only imagine how green everything must be in summer.  While there is no pool a 20 min walk takes you to crystal clear natural pools.  We did not check them out as the park was closing within 30 min of us finding the camp but the campers we spoke to said they were breathtaking.  I can believe it too cause everything else was so perfect.  The shop was huge and well stocked once you get past the tourist traps.  The Coffee was excellent, seems silly to mention coffee but we are coffeeholics so a good cup deserves mentioning.  The bathrooms while very old were so clean and tidy and kitchen area was the same.

There are magical hiking trails all over the Park and everything from a easy 20 min hike to a 2 day hike is on offer.  We enjoyed a picnic on the river and while hubby caught a few winks in the quite clean air the kids skipped rocks and dipped their toes in freezing water.

I can't wait to get back there again.  10/10 from us.

There is another site called Rugged Glen that is also part of the park but outside the park itself.  We stopped for a look and it is stunning but there is no security, never mind a gate and we actually thought the site was abandoned as there was no-one there at all. I would not be happy staying there at all so if you go there be sure to book Mahai.

Hi Sharon,

I have to agree. We stopped there for a day visit in December and it was great. We took the walk to the Cascades and spent the day swimming in the pools and playing with the kids. It is truly beautiful. It was quite busy but it was peak season at that stage.

We asre booked to return this December for a week!! Cant wait!

Thanks for your post - it makes us more excited to go!!

Des

Hi Sharon,  Do you have a breakdown on their tariffs. Try to find it on the net. We are only two people some parks we find too expensive if they charge per site, when they charge for a max of 4 or 6 people etc.

Sharon I must agree although it's been many years sine we last visited Mahai, the campsite is in the amphitheater and beautiful. We spent one december there and every afternoon about 16h00 the clouds would paperer and the heavens opened up, two hours later the sun was shining and all the fires would be lit. The kids also enjoyed the environment and the playing field in the middle - not sure if that is still there. Also did the trail on horseback there was wonderful, accept i was kicked by one of the horses :) tina was bloody sore. It's one of the camps on our list to return too again. It may actually be a good place for the forum to come together as it is easily reached by the natal members as well - Will have to be a summer camp tho. There are plenty of hikes as well, the hike to Tiger falls was great.

Mary I did take a brochure but I left it in the cubby of the car and hubby is currently in Botswana on work ATM. He mentioned he was going to stop and check out the Lion Park site here the Saamtrek is next year while there. He gets home Saturday and I will check to see if the brochure is still there. Hopefully he did not clean out the car and toss it. It was reasonable though, I remember that much. Brian that field is there and it's the perfect place for a game of Rugga or cricket. We were lucky enough to be there late in the afternoon and saw a little of the sunset and you are quite right it was breathtaking. :) Oh while I am at it let me mention a little Pizza joint we found on route back to ATKV called "Tower of Pizza" we stopped to enjoy the sunset ad wound up staying for supper. WOW have not had such good pizza in years, real pizza, pizza oven pizza not the electric pizza offered by Scooters and Debonairs. We had the ham and pineapple and Mexican and they were so good and loaded high with toppings. As for the lime milkshake, it was amazing. Oh and the best part was the Kiddy area, more for younger kids than older it my boys had a ball pushing each other around in the old tractor. Be sure to say hi to the owners dogs 'AD' and 'HD' they are the cutest little dogs. Lovely place to enjoy sunset in the Berg.
