Ok all so I posted that my heads making more noise the gearbox of that 18-voetsak...

Reminds me of a pair of socks I once bought... they where white and printed along the length at the top FOOT-SACK... Thought that was quite nice...

Oh yes...

18-voetsak vaaljapie that lives in Herman's mieliefield...

Now Herman don't know it's there cause it's hidden in the mielies that Herman forgotten to oes...

Oh noisy head....

Yes well see I'm planning December and I've still got that thing on my bucket list called the 8 passes chalenge so I thinks this year I'm gonna be ticking that box.... BUT... BUT...

(Now here's the "koppie-raas" BIT) ek gaan sonder sleep-wa... I'm gonna rough camp... Live out the Landy.

just like I "lived off the Vespa" on my "Circumnavigate SA" adventure...

I'm gonna have me another real AD-VEN-TURE!!!!

YAAAAAY (4Th childhood kicking in)

Heck, I roug camped when on border patrol for 2 years... sonder dakkie

I rough camped when I used to tour by bike... Sleep on a lilo (remember them? used them in swimming pools... The first of the first blow-up mattress'es...Under a tarp next to the bike... Get cold? start the bike.... Or freeze...

OK... Ok... I get that I'm not 18 anymore, so I plan on using a 2 man pup tent....

And I got the best of the best hiking tents, A backpacker Kestrel 3... Ok so they call it a three man, but for three you got to be a heck of a lot more friendly than I'm prepared to be, so it's a 2 man...

And so I started to rummage around in my storeroomthis weekend... And guess what? I got's 4... Yip 4 count them 1;2;3;4;.... 2 men tents...

A blue canvas jobbie that got turfed out the ark when it made landfall,

A Hikerlight 2  (probibly manage 4 seasons) quite good

And a Crapmaster (Oops Campmaster) Bushwacker 2 (probibly a 1 season jobbie), but its a free standing tent so you don't need pegs.....

Now why scratch around If I got  the best of the best... That stood me for 2 storm wracked days in the berg??? (jonks ago)

Biking days.... Reminds me of when I got lost in the Hans Merensky forest...

Oh hell I'm wobbling.....Back to tents...

Well it needs 28 pegs.... Yip... Never ever come down, got a snow skirt & all but needs 28 pegs to fully peg... Suppose I could get away with about 10 pegs, but I suffer from compulsive obsessive syndrome so I just KNOW I'm gonna use 28 pegs....

Every time...

So what's that got to do with a freeby set of crapmaster (Oops Campmaster) flexy-bendy-black poles? Well I wants to put up a shelter in front of the 2 man tent to cook / etc under... Just high enough so that it's the same height as the ridge of the Kestrel...

Anyhow I got more news on a shower cubical upgrade but it's 07:00 and I got ta go.... Hold your breath....

You have enough tents for your rough camp. laughing   Yes, and remember you are not 18 any more.  Make sure you are warm and safe.   Now the big question, where is this rough camp going to be?   Eight passes?   Jy sien nog kans vir baie Warren.surprised

Freda, like when I went right round SA (JHB to Port Nolleth to CT to Ritchards bay to Alldays) on my 200cc Vespa which I named pop-n-fart I just winged it.

I had some book or other with all the campsites & tele-no's and when I got there I would phone.

But if it was too expensive (being ripped off) I simply found a "spot" along the road, "cased" it out, went on a bit, made supper further down the road then when it was darkish turned round & zipped in. 1;2;3; tent up me & Goedsper (my mutt at that time) asleep)

Same principal as when we did border patrols... We made a "fop basis", did all the noisy things then moved into the TB (temprary base) for the night very, very quietly...

Die ou-manne on the forum will get that.

Next morning casual brekkie gesiggie (en ander noodsakel plekkies) nat en voeps-waps tent af en..... daar's ek heel rustig oppi-way

That trip.... That was an ADVENTURE of note......

Freda, That's very kind of you, Scruffy (whose now putting on weight again) would indeed be very excited... But.... The 8 passes are in the Rhodes / Lady-grey- Tiffendale area, so I've posted this for perhaps you might one day want to go and see some of the most beautiful country in our country.

Lifted from Google (Pronounced by yours truly) goeggle

Just south of Lesotho, the tail of the Drakensberg chain of mountains curls all the way from Lady Grey in the west past the village of Rhodes to link up with the KwaZulu-Natal Berg north of Mount Fletcher. At 2588 metres, Naude’s Nek between Maclear/Mount Fletcher and Rhodes is the highest public road pass in South Africa, while Jouberts’ Pass outside Lady Grey is the third highest (2349 metres). Lundean’s Nek offers a peep into Lesotho and its jagged peaks next door; Barkly Pass, the country’s highest tarred pass, features fantastical rock formations; the little-used Bastervoetpad Pass has vistas rivaling those of the Valley of a Thousand Hills; and the tricky Carlisleshoek and Volunteershoek Passes to Tiffindell Ski Resort take you to the roof of South Africa.

Spectacular views, big skies and hulking mountains are the order of the day. Adventure lovers will find a range of accommodation to suit all pockets, as well as numerous outdoor activities, from mountain biking and hiking to horse riding and fly-fishing. Birders can look forward to ticking more than 250 species in a range of habitats and wild flowers are at their best in spring.

Sometimes, the area turns into a winter wonderland, with snow turning driving conditions treacherous. While it has been recorded in every month of the year in this area, it usually falls between May and August. With 14 passes in the Eastern Cape Highlands, there are more than can be covered here, leaving great opportunities for those with time to explore further.

Recommended routes

You can approach this cluster of passes from the west (Lady Grey), north (via Zastron and the Sterkspruit road, or from Lesotho via Telle Bridge border post), east (Maclear/Mount Fletcher) or south (Elliot). Don’t be deceived by the relatively short distances on the map; allow plenty of time to drive each pass as the going is slow on the winding gravel roads.

The 8 Passes Challenge consists of the following mountain passes being travelled by 4x4 vehicle

NAUDE'S NEK The highest mountain pass in South Africa.

JOUBERT'S PASS The third highest mountain pass in South Africa.

VOLUNTEERSHOEK Up to Tiffindell Ski Resort and the highest point in the Cape.

CARLISLESHOEK ...And down the other side to the historical Rhodes Village.

LUNDEAN'S NEK A scenic route to the Lesotho border post at Telebridge.

BASTERVOETPAD Challenging driving and incredible views of the valleys below.

BARKLY PASS The only tarred pass - but the views are worth it!

OTTO DU PLESSIS A wild and unspoiled pass with excellent birding

Sorry forgot to add this

I've been there before went up Joubert's and Naudes with this rig just to prove a point about tandem towing.....

Unfortunately all my photos where RDPshopped when my PC was stolen.....

It really is astoundly spectacular country... I would happily sleep at the top of the pass....

Recon It'll be safe enough.. Nobody's gonna be bonker's enough go up there in the dark

Oh the van (see the sticker on the back? That was my  WIE-WEET-WAAR It's a South African thing (with an OX-wagon picture)

Quite ironical tht name as, a year or two later, I left it perminently at Umtentweni caravan park so that I could zip down there.

Unfortunately that particular year (trust my bloody luck) upstream, the ruddy dam burst and the caravan park was flooded out,

So the wee little wagon simply upped & floated off......

WIE WEET WAAR die DONNERSE WIE WEET WA WOU HEEN is enigeeen se raai... Seker see toe  Hehehehelaughingsurprisedcry

They eventually pulled it out of the mangrove swamp well on the way to the sea....

Kan jy dit gloo

Jaa... Freda...  Ek't nog so heele plastic sak vol stories...

Johan, do it but use the "verblyf" soos chalet's en hotelle wat in daai omgewing is dis wragtig asemrovend wereld...

In my teeny-weeny opinion, the Natal Parks Drakensberg and that area are way above the Cape Mountains and the Eastern TVL... Added to the challange of the passes It's not to be missed...

Morning Shaun..

Now, I'm not one for GPS's and such, I mean who the heck can get lost in this tiddly little piece of real esate called SA...

Sides Stanley found Livingstone in the deepest, darkest of Africa, using nothing more than a bleeding compass...

Now, not one for bragging, but with my astounding sense of direction, I have never, ever, ever, ever been lost...

Had some very interesting journeys, with some really, really surprising destinations, but Lost?

Never........

BTW I was on my way to Umtentwenie.... After a spot of fishing at Bloemhof....

Bloemfontein... N5 & N6.... they must have got them roadsigns mixed up after fixing up the potholes and put the signs back up.....

See, that what comes from relying on other things like GP's-es and roadsigns....

(That's my story, and I'm sticking to it)

Quite an adventure I must say....
