We travelling from Johannesburg to Gordon's Bay with our caravan. Can anyone recommend sites around Gariep Dam area or slightly further. We may do the trip with two overnight stops. Where have you stayed?

Hi Trish

Welcome to the forum.  We usually travel to Plettenberg Bay or Capetown during December towing the caravan.  We leave early on our start day and travel all the way to Aventura Resort at the Gariep Dam.  Thats about 700km  From there onward we take it very slow.  Some of the stops included:

  • Travalia Guest Farm at Three Sisters (Do eat the supper they provide you won't be sorry)
  • You can try the Karoo Nasional Park just outside of Beaufort West.
  • Or go the N12/N2 Route. This will take you through Oudtshoorn and a great Stopover is Kleinplaas in Oudtshoorn.

Thanks Leon we will take your advice and plan to go via Beaufort West as recently we travelled the N2 from George to Cape Town and there was quite a lot of roadworks. Happy Caravanning!!

We stayed at Rive Destiny resort and can recommend it. Caravan stands and rooms are available. 34 km from Colesberg and 15km from Gariep dam

Just a little further south past Garieb Dam in Colesburg, behind the school is Onze Rus Guest House & Caravan Park. They have a restaurant and self catering units...

I agree with the Forever Resorts Gariep option at Gariep Dam - especially if you can get hold of a so-called luxury site (with private ablution facilities).

Leon mentions Travalia Guest Farm. They also offer two caravan sites.

I think it is a sin to pass Karoo National Park.

Forgive my curiosity, but where do you plan to camp in Gordons Bay?

My apology for the last two photos in the album. I made a mistake and I am too stupid to delete it. Nevertheless, it is photos of the collapsed deck at Mopani in Kruger.

Look at Google Maps for around the area, it will higlight with names the overnight stops, then just google name and do your enquiries

You can also try a long loop via Kirkwood in Eastern Cape, it seems you like to explore, from there a lot of lesser know inland camping and exploration site can be reached on a days travel
