Hi everyone,

I drive a 2018 Toyota RAV 4 GX. We are looking to buy a Sprite Splash or a Sprite Swing (looking at the 2005 to 2009 models)

Since we are newbies at this, how do I determine if we'll be able to tow one of these caravans with my RAV? Anybody else ever towed a caravan with a RAV?

Much appreciated!

Welcome. Usually the tare of the vehicle(on license disk) must not exceed the GVM of the caravan(on license plate of caravan). On the specs of the RAV 4 the Toyota indicates the towing capacity as 1000 kg. Seems as if the  towing ability of the RAV is lower than the legal towing allowance(I don't think the Tare on the vehicle will only be 1000 kg.) The Splash will be a defnite no no. Swing might be an option, gvm just over 1000 kg. Surfer is about the same size than Swing, but lighter. Sprite Sprint is lighter as well.

Hi and wellcome to the forum.

Some points to note.

You need an EB or EC

license to tow any trailer over 750Kg.

The GMV of your trailer/caravan may exceed the tara of your towing vehicle.

The weight on your towhitch may not exceed the rated weight of the towbar on your car, or 100kg, which ever is the lesser.

Do not tow anything heavier than that which your carmaker specify, as this will invalidate your guarantee.

If all the above is in place, hook up the van you wish to buy, take it for a test drive and only buy if you are sure that it is a comfortable tow.

Welcome to the forum Rentia.

This happens to be one of the models where one must make sure about what Toyota specify as the maximum towing weight. The new models may be able to tow 1000kg but some older models were limited to 500kg as per these specs below. Here one cannot just look at the legal maximum as dictated by the Tare of the RAV4.

Ok so the tare of my RAV is 1550kg. And according to the vehicle specs in my booklet, towing capacity is 1000kg.

The Sprint's GVM is 1090kg. Would that work?

you are going to get different answers on this one. The dry weight on the Sprint(tare) is 910 kg. This weight is the weight of the caravan without tents. GVM is sometimes more than actual weight to allow for extra weight of camping gear, luggage, etc. It is quite possible that the Sprint would not even weigh 1090kg packed. I would personally not worry too much, as the weight is close to specs. You are legally permitted to to tow up to 1550 kg. You might end up with problems with warranty on your vehicle, but with 910 kg dry weight you can load 180 kg before you even have to worry about the vehicle specs.

The Sprint is a light caravan and people towing Sprints usually agree that the Sprint tows like a dream. Test one behind your vehicle and you will know what to do.

If your Rav is still under guarantee, get a written confirmation that this will not invalidate the guarantee.

If not, take the van for a test run and then decide.

Rentia welcome to the forum.

As you indicated the tow capacity of the RAV is 1000kg.  You should pick a caravan of which the GVM is less or equal to the 1000kg.

Remember the GVM of the caravan is the weight of the caravan loaded.  Now please be advised that the old Jurgens factory in earlier years were not true about the weight classification of the various caravans.  So make sure that the caravan that you buy truelly weight whatever is stated on the identification plate.

So, from here on it is easy.

If the GVM of the caravan you want to buy is then less or equal to the 1000 kg towing capacity you will have no problem weight legal wise.

Then there is the power of the RAV's engine to consider.  Is it a petrol/ diesel engine.  What is the torque spec.  This will be the difference if you will crawl or drive uphill when towing the caravan.

Rentia, I own the same RAV4 as well. I can tell you now that I would not suggest towing a caravan with the CVT. Although Toyota does mention 1000kg towing capacity, I would be very careful...

The MAX I would tow is a small trailer of less than 750kg if it ever comes to that.

The RAV4 is a lovely vehicle, fun to drive etc. But in my opinion not really for towing a caravan..........

And now comes the part where you want a certain caravan and do not have the right vehicle for it, and if you (like I did before) consider to buy a caravan to match the vehicle, you will not really have what you wanted and have to settle for less and then nothing really works out as you anticipated. I am talking about space, packing, weight issues etc.

If you want to buy a big (ish) caravan like a splash, or swing, you had something in mind when looking at those, and just maybe setlling for something much smaller is not always the idea.

BUT, let that not deter you from having a great camping experience as I do not know your future plans or specific situation.

I always wanted a fleetline/penta, but had a 2.0 Megane, then a Mazda6, which both had enough power, but I had to settle for much lighter and smaller caravan, and eventually had to pay a lot of school fees to get where I am now.....

Point is, the RAV4 is not really an ideal towing vehicle, and if you are maybe some of those who buy a new car in the next 3 to 4 years and then you have a chance to maybe get the right tow vehicle for the caravan you want.......
