Dalk Weesgerus?

Jip....dis hy daai!

Well played HM! That's Elands Bay! Vensterklip is the camping resort, about 5 kms up the road. Only 10 sites all with their own braai and dishwashing facility as shown. Velorenvlei beyond the pasture...good birding to be had. The photo of the ocean was taken from the hotel. Old school and unpretentious but what a sunset view with a sundowner! Where about is Weesgerus in Vaalieland? Apologies, but my local geography is pretty bad.

Here's the "vensterklip" the campsite is named after. It's on the hill as you head north to Lamberts Bay...

Googled it. North of Pretoria and Bela-Bela...not a bad guess. Lovely place. Maybe if my Kruger trip involves north to south as before, this would definitely deserve a visit...

Ian, on your KNP N-S trips, which camps do you stay in and how long in each one?

The day after running the Two Oceans we decided to let the car take us north and ended up at Elandsbaai. What would have been one night at the hotel became three days. Fell in love with the place and the people.

There was a small campsite next to the hotel back then.

The only resort I have camped at is Forever Warmbad. Now Bela Bela. But looking through mags, internet, reviews etc there are a lot of nice resorts all around Bela Bela.

HM: Was up there 2015. The campsite at the hotel is below that garden wall. Shrubs between the sites for privacy and some wind protection. Reckon it's still going.

Steamer:

Only visited KNP once. Planned a year in advance for camp stops and groceries etc. Spent 3 weeks in the park as I reckoned it would be a one time thing and the travelling costs and tolls had to be factored in. It was 2010 Aug/Sep after the football world cup. Every camp in Kruger we alternated between cheap fixed bungalows and tenting. Hence we only needed ice every other day as we could stock meat and ice bricks in the fridges provided.

Cape Town to Karoo NP, Reynecke Park, De Rust then into the park. Punda Maria 1 night (tent), Shingwedzi 2 nights (chalet), Letaba 2 nights (tent), Mopani (just had a brekkie overlooking the Pioneer Dam), Olifants (just our own leftovers for brekkie), Satara 4 nights (tent), Skukuza 2 nights (tent), Pretoriuskop 6 nights (3 nights tent, 3 nights bungalow without fridge). This was due to swapping out Berg-en-Dal booking as the baboon issue had become out of hand and there were controlled fires in the area. Lower Sabie 2 nights (hut), Croc Bridge (skottel brekkie on return from grocery shopping), Skukuza 3 nights (safari tent with fridge).

Then Pilgrims Rest, Ermelo, Golden Gate NP, Aliwal North (family), Karoo NP then home. Planning Natal and Southern Kruger for next and last trip BUT...can see this not being cast in stone. The north is sooo tranquil and way less traffic. Also Letaba with plenty of shade is my favourite camp in the park for tenting/caravanning.

Enjoy if you're busy planning...it's half the fun and really gets you excited!!cool

The camp site belonging to the Elands Bay hotel has about six stands.  The ablutions are old but when we stayed there a few years ago, it was newly upgraded and the stay was quite pleasant.  Between the hotel and the beach and on lower ground than the hotel's camp,  is a municipal camp.  In season it might be just OK, but off season it seemed to us to be a risk camping there on your own.  There is no gate control and many people from the town came in to use the ablutions and damaged them.  The sculleries also are far below standard and it seems the municipality does not give a damn. We stayed there a previous time some more years back and it was OK then.  You can camp literally on the beach with just a fence separating you from the sea and Manatoc fences separating the stands from each other.  In 'n stormy night is sounded as if our caravan might be swept away.  It is a pity that such very nice camps should go to the dogs.

I agree the town has a lot of character and is worth a stay.  The restaurant just left of the hotel if you exit the hotel is a jewel with a lot of character and very good seafood. Well it was when we were there. Just outside the town, next to the fishing harbour, there is a permanent herd(?) of seals.  If you are careful and move slowly, you can just about get in touching distance from the.  The Sishen ore train too is a spectacle to behold.  Next time we will have a go at Vensterklip. It looks like better option that the hotel's camp.

Yeah. Good choice. Vensterklip has its own pub and has facilities for rustic functions too. Regarding the municipal site, that's indicative of most municipal  resorts in the Cape. It really is a tragedy as some of the locations really deserve better. That restaurant you mention I think may be the Wit Mossel Pot. Never popped in there...

The south-easter pumps here in the summer months! Would suggest you visit early autumn or winter when it's not raining. Mostly gentle westerlies and north-westerlies blowing around that time. Haven't experienced security issues but baboons may visit, though have never bothered us before. Keep a catty handy in case. Nothing special re ablutions as they are old school. Stone braais all together in one area so bring your portable if you want to braai on site. Small secluded beach below camping area. Terrific views across False Bay (that one photo through the trees shows Hangklip in the distance near Betties Bay). That and Cape Point make up the mouth of the bay. Plenty to see on drives in the area. Definitely worth a few nights if you are touring Cape Town and surrounds. The sunrise across the water is magnificent! Enjoy!

Thanks Harv- will keep all this in mind next time we get there.  We have been to the camp to see what it  looks like and I must say, the setting is probably one of the best scenic wise in the country.

All our best Kgalagadi sightings were from here, as opposed to Nossob. Mata-Mata we exchanged for extra days at TR as road surface was too hectic. Ostriches, secretary bird, kori bustard, giant eagle owl, tawny eagle, black-backed jackal, lion, cheetah and caracal amongst others.

A direct hit! Bonnievale River Lodge it is! 10 platformed sites for tents and caravans. Only tents allowed on the grass with cars parked up top so that no views are obscured.  Sunday to Thursday there were only 3 sites occupied. Terrific! 5 kms from the town main road for groceries etc. Wet a line or read a book. There's no rush here...

Jammer so min mense plaas fotos- ek is ook skuldig. Gawe idee gewees Geert!

Dis dieselfde watergat waar die webcam geinstalleer is. Is hierdie watergat vanaf die kamp sigbaar?

Ja Geert.

There are sites right there by the waterhole. Dansan was parked in direct view 40 to 50 meters from the hide.

Geert if you do a google maps/satelite view of the camp, you will see the dam, hide at the fence where the camera is, an ablution 5 to 10 meters from the hide. Camp sites semi circle around the ablution block.... non electrified sites in those trees to the right (east) against the fence.

We were towards the left .... view per my picture in the trip report.

yes many would have seen the dogs....

I read that the crested guinea fowl were likely to be seen around the area but we only camped there 1 night in 2010 and never got to spot them. Still regret not planning a longer stay at Punda to this day. There was no webcam at that time and the waterhole was just a mud puddle! Awoke at 1 am and watched a large ellie dismantling a tree alongside the fence. What a welcome to Kruger!

There's a pack of 7 wild dogs around Punda. We saw them on three occasions during our 8 night stay in Punda last year May. Twice on the Mahonie Loop and the third time on the tar road on the day we moved to Shingwedzi.

Doggies! My favourite! Saw a pack of 6 near Nkuhlu on my 2nd last night during our trip. Well played Chris!

RichardJ: we camped right of the hide facing the waterhole. Not too far right as those were the non-power sites. The pool was out of order so never got to see that either. So along with the dry waterhole, Punda seems generally water-free round August/September after the dry winter...

Richard - Yes, as Harv said (and you know), it is Bontebok NP near Swellendam. The new entrance road is a tar road to the new Reception (very near to the N2). And the road from Reception to Langelsieskraal rest camp, although gravel, is in much better condition than the old one (from the previous Reception)

And Harv - that last photos of yours. I guess it is Môreson River Cottages and Campsite next to the Breed River on the Slanghoek Road? Never been there myself.

Bontebok itself I do not find that exciting, but the camp is fabulous, right on the banks of the Breede river. It has got that Bushveld feeling, almost as if you are in Kruger, even though you are just a few kilos from Swellendam.  Their ablusions also are top notch.

Well played Chris! Crack shot. There are 10 sites on the shallow reaches of the river. The source of the Breede is just up the road at the Witzenberge and surrounds, hence the rocks and pebbles in abundance. Not much to do if you're not a wine fan, but quiet and relaxing as you will expect.....

Hi Hendrik - have only camped at Double Mouth. It is located in a EC Nature Reserve, so is isolated from Morgan Bay. Ideal spot for fishing. Ablutions were being upgraded last time I was there. There are 2 other caravan parks in Morgan Bay.

Douglas: looks a tad windy. Plan to stop at Yellowsands on the way up to Hole-in-the-Wall. Is Doublemouth a better option for an overnight in a small tent? Closer to the road back to N2? Will Google the spot. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Harv. Double Mouth quite sheltered from wind as the campsite is in a horse-shoe valley with plenty of trees. The 5k gravel road from Morgans Bay to Double Mouth is often in a poor condition. Not worth travelling for one night stop-over. Also a bit further from N2 as Yellowsands.

At the turn-off along the East-coast road to Yellowsands is a camping site called Areena - very secure sheltered sites along the river - they have an excellent restaurant on site.

(P.S. - Double Mouth controlled by EC Tourism so don't think Wild Card valid there. )

Aah, tricky. This is our proposed stop back from Kruger. Have seen the website but don't see Champagne Castle from this angle which threw me off the scent. This is close to the Boys' Choir territory, is it not?

Yes...Drakensberg boys choir is just outside the park next to the supermarket

On our last trip to The Baths in Citrusdal, we met a retired couple from Toti who recommended this resort to us. It is one of their regular getaway spots as its vistas are breathtaking. Lovely stuff!

Spot-on Harv. Great overnight place. I've never camped there, but stayed over a number of times in their chalets. The road stall, where you can also enjoy meals, was voted 2nd best road stall a number of years ago by readers of Weg magazine.

If you stay over in the chalets, you are welcomed with a freshly baked farm bread on arrival. We never drive past Kambro, even just for a coffee, when we travel the N12.

Chris: Bullseye! Guano Caves, about 6kms out of town from Montagu on the R62. Cold and heated pools. Short walk down that path from campsite to 3 pools, braai pit and boma with wooden tables and benches. The cave is in that ravine, so a bit of a hike which I never did. Penned animals for the kids to get to know.

Yip - Motswedi campsite in Mokala National Park.

Never camped there myself, but stayed numerous times at Mosu Lodge when I still worked. It was the ideal base to work from when I visited customers in Douglas and Modderrivier.

Mokala - in my opinion one of the best National Parks in SA.

Chris, that Mokala site is unfenced is it not? A bloke from my pub spent a few weeks there a few months ago. He can't speak highly enough of the place. He loves his solitude.

As jy rustig natuur wil geniet is Willemsrus goeie opsie.

Harv - yes, Motswedi camp site (like Mosu- & Lilydale Lodges) in Mokala, is "unfenced". Just a low (about knee-high) single electric wire around the camp to keep the more dangerous game (buffaloes and rhinos) out of the camp.

It is amazing that the single wire keeps the large animals out. I have seen at one of the lodges in Sabi Sabi how the elephant stands on the other side not daring to cross.

Harv - It is obvious one cannot corner you with campsites in the Western Cape. Montagu it is indeed.

Let's go a bit outside South African borders, but popular among South Africans.
