Harv - those last photos of yours. Maybe one of the Breede River resorts? Bonnievale River Lodge? Just guessing - never been there myself.

A direct hit! Bonnievale River Lodge it is! 10 platformed sites for tents and caravans. Only tents allowed on the grass with cars parked up top so that no views are obscured.  Sunday to Thursday there were only 3 sites occupied. Terrific! 5 kms from the town main road for groceries etc. Wet a line or read a book. There's no rush here...

Jammer so min mense plaas fotos- ek is ook skuldig. Gawe idee gewees Geert!

Ja Geert.

There are sites right there by the waterhole. Dansan was parked in direct view 40 to 50 meters from the hide.

Geert if you do a google maps/satelite view of the camp, you will see the dam, hide at the fence where the camera is, an ablution 5 to 10 meters from the hide. Camp sites semi circle around the ablution block.... non electrified sites in those trees to the right (east) against the fence.

We were towards the left .... view per my picture in the trip report.

yes many would have seen the dogs....

I read that the crested guinea fowl were likely to be seen around the area but we only camped there 1 night in 2010 and never got to spot them. Still regret not planning a longer stay at Punda to this day. There was no webcam at that time and the waterhole was just a mud puddle! Awoke at 1 am and watched a large ellie dismantling a tree alongside the fence. What a welcome to Kruger!

There's a pack of 7 wild dogs around Punda. We saw them on three occasions during our 8 night stay in Punda last year May. Twice on the Mahonie Loop and the third time on the tar road on the day we moved to Shingwedzi.

I would like to try camping there on a tour.

Doggies! My favourite! Saw a pack of 6 near Nkuhlu on my 2nd last night during our trip. Well played Chris!

RichardJ: we camped right of the hide facing the waterhole. Not too far right as those were the non-power sites. The pool was out of order so never got to see that either. So along with the dry waterhole, Punda seems generally water-free round August/September after the dry winter...

Richard - Yes, as Harv said (and you know), it is Bontebok NP near Swellendam. The new entrance road is a tar road to the new Reception (very near to the N2). And the road from Reception to Langelsieskraal rest camp, although gravel, is in much better condition than the old one (from the previous Reception)

And Harv - that last photos of yours. I guess it is Môreson River Cottages and Campsite next to the Breed River on the Slanghoek Road? Never been there myself.

Bontebok itself I do not find that exciting, but the camp is fabulous, right on the banks of the Breede river. It has got that Bushveld feeling, almost as if you are in Kruger, even though you are just a few kilos from Swellendam.  Their ablusions also are top notch.

Well played Chris! Crack shot. There are 10 sites on the shallow reaches of the river. The source of the Breede is just up the road at the Witzenberge and surrounds, hence the rocks and pebbles in abundance. Not much to do if you're not a wine fan, but quiet and relaxing as you will expect.....

Hi Hendrik - have only camped at Double Mouth. It is located in a EC Nature Reserve, so is isolated from Morgan Bay. Ideal spot for fishing. Ablutions were being upgraded last time I was there. There are 2 other caravan parks in Morgan Bay.

Douglas: looks a tad windy. Plan to stop at Yellowsands on the way up to Hole-in-the-Wall. Is Doublemouth a better option for an overnight in a small tent? Closer to the road back to N2? Will Google the spot. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Harv. Double Mouth quite sheltered from wind as the campsite is in a horse-shoe valley with plenty of trees. The 5k gravel road from Morgans Bay to Double Mouth is often in a poor condition. Not worth travelling for one night stop-over. Also a bit further from N2 as Yellowsands.

At the turn-off along the East-coast road to Yellowsands is a camping site called Areena - very secure sheltered sites along the river - they have an excellent restaurant on site.

(P.S. - Double Mouth controlled by EC Tourism so don't think Wild Card valid there. )

Dis reg.....DRAGONS PEAK

Aah, tricky. This is our proposed stop back from Kruger. Have seen the website but don't see Champagne Castle from this angle which threw me off the scent. This is close to the Boys' Choir territory, is it not?

On our last trip to The Baths in Citrusdal, we met a retired couple from Toti who recommended this resort to us. It is one of their regular getaway spots as its vistas are breathtaking. Lovely stuff!

Spot-on Harv. Great overnight place. I've never camped there, but stayed over a number of times in their chalets. The road stall, where you can also enjoy meals, was voted 2nd best road stall a number of years ago by readers of Weg magazine.

If you stay over in the chalets, you are welcomed with a freshly baked farm bread on arrival. We never drive past Kambro, even just for a coffee, when we travel the N12.

Chris: Bullseye! Guano Caves, about 6kms out of town from Montagu on the R62. Cold and heated pools. Short walk down that path from campsite to 3 pools, braai pit and boma with wooden tables and benches. The cave is in that ravine, so a bit of a hike which I never did. Penned animals for the kids to get to know.

Yip - Motswedi campsite in Mokala National Park.

Never camped there myself, but stayed numerous times at Mosu Lodge when I still worked. It was the ideal base to work from when I visited customers in Douglas and Modderrivier.

Mokala - in my opinion one of the best National Parks in SA.

As jy rustig natuur wil geniet is Willemsrus goeie opsie.

Harv - yes, Motswedi camp site (like Mosu- & Lilydale Lodges) in Mokala, is "unfenced". Just a low (about knee-high) single electric wire around the camp to keep the more dangerous game (buffaloes and rhinos) out of the camp.

It is amazing that the single wire keeps the large animals out. I have seen at one of the lodges in Sabi Sabi how the elephant stands on the other side not daring to cross.

Let's go a bit outside South African borders, but popular among South Africans.

Die enigste oord in Noordwes wat ek ken is ATKV Buffelspoort - waarvoor ek nogal lief is. In my werksdae het ek by twee of drie geleenthede by Aeroden Lodge oorgeslaap in die chalets.

Inderwaarheid was ek twee keer daar - my eerste en my laaste keer.

Maar waar bevind ek my? Maklike een.

Yip - Letaba. In my opinion one of the most beautiful camps in Kruger.

My favourite campsite in the park too. Never tried Balule, Maroela or Tsendze though.

Correct. Riggton Farm Resort,1km away from Bonnievale River Lodge (earlier in this thread) on the opposite bank. There is an open grass site beyond the trees with brick braais for caravans. Worth a visit in my opinion. Wel gedaan!

No-one had a go at the spot prior to Riggton yet. Probably equidistant from Cape Town and Vaalieland. Probably further from Durban....

I was under the impression that both posts' photos were from Riggton.

Having a closer look now, I recognize Augrabies' camp site - where there is more baboon and monkeys than humans. Last time I was there, even the main door leading to Reception and the shop was kept close with a notice on it: "Please keep doors closed because of monkey problem".

One of my regular overnight places. On one of my stay-overs I had a real nuisance visitor to my caravan. I had a problem to chase him out. He most probably had an eye on the brandy bottle in front of him.

Einste Geert.

Sorry about the confusion between the photos, Chris. Also struggled to find the thread. Thought is was being shut down. Augrabies seemed to have the baboon issue under control in 2018 when we visited. They regularly trapped the leaders and moved them along, but the vervets felt the wrath of my catty a few times after stealing our chips. They learnt their lesson and stayed away after that.....

We have overnighted there twice. Second time we had a refurbished unit which was superior to the first time.

But, most stands seem to be sloped. Tree branches were too low for a standard caravan.

Both times we arrived in the dark so battled a little  to get in.

Harv - you are correct about the brand of the brandy - KWV.

But the photos on my last input was taken at Klub Koppisol outside Vereeniging. A neat resort, but oh, it can get cold there in winter.

Something I did not like was the very early (loud) prayer calls from the nearby mosque. To me not a nice way to be woken early on a cold winter morning. But please - I respect anybody's religion and the culture and traditions accompanies it.

And during the last visit, for some or other reason we did not feel safe - especially when the gate guard came around early evening and told us he's knocking off and gave us his mobile number in case of problems.

Daai braaiers lyk of dit nie vir my sal werk nie....gelukkig is my losstaande een altyd byderhand

Die Smokey Joe was al menige keer 'n "life saver" as dit by braai kom.

Ek was self baie lanklaas daar.

I've been to Tshipise once - only as a stop-over for one night, on my way to Punda via Pafuri gate. But it was during peak season and we battled to find a site for the night. I plan to do the same route next May (if we can go camping then😷).

Lyk soos Ebb and Flow by Wilderness.

Ebb and Flow: the guinea fowl jumping in my lap to steal some braai food, the louries pretty conspicuous considering they are shy by nature, African fish eagle calls and sightings and as you say, drongos, eating off plates and by hand! A paradise for sure....

Persoonlik sal ek lekker daar kuier vir 2 of 3 nagte. Dit wat ek gesien het, was netjies.

Harv - Ebb & Flow is surely a bird lover's paradise. It is the only place where I've seen a pair of Narina Trogons. We went rowing upstream on the river with a rented cano - to the very furthest point where you can row. There we used the small pontoon that you have to operate yourself to cross the river. We then walked up to the waterfall. While walking, we saw bushbuck and baboons. Rowing back to camp, I suddenly saw the bright red of the lower breast of two birds, hiding in a thicket. I had my binocs with me, but not my bird book. I could only ID then once we returned to the caravan. That was a special birding moment for me.

I also have a photo somewhere of a drongo eating out of my wife's hand. Gee, how I long for that part of our country now.

Wagon Wheels?  Narina trogons! you lucky fish! never seen one myself. Is Battlefields or Kwa-Rie better situated for trips to Rorke's Drift, Blood River site an Islwandla? Will one day cover all 3 drives or do I need 2?

Piet - nee, dit is The Vale.

The Vale is egter 'n uitstekende alternatief. BAIE beter as Steenbokkie.

Dankie Chris.

My opinion is Kwa Rie is better situated. Talana Museum is just out of town and is a must. At least two days otherwise it will be a rush. The restuarant there does a Sunday lunch to die for. Booking essential.

From there you can also visit the battlefields around Newcastle and Volksrust. (Majuba) Need another day.

Aan-die-Oewer by Orania.
