Has anyone camped at Ndumo lately? If so what are the roads like and the conditions of the campsite, ablutions etc.

Stayed in chalet April 2012, camp site looked good ,nice trees, well grassed, electricity points, very neat and tidy. Communal ablutions shared by the chalets, were clean and plenty hot water. Rather far from the camping area especially at night for the ladies.
The road to the park was under construction had about 10 km to go at that stage and certainly not caravan friendly. The part that was completed was very good. Do not know present status of road, would be interested to know.

Monica and I spent a few days at Ndumo at the beginning of May and we will be going back early in the new year. The game reserve is very special and the rest camp has some nice sites. the ablutions block is a fair distance from the camp sites but are spotlessly clean. One of the power points was not working when we were there, the only problem we were aware of. The caravan park was full (caravans and tents) each night during the 4 nights we were there.

The last 10 Kms before getting to the park were 'under construction' in May and looked like they had been for a long time. We drove them quite slowly and had no problems. I have certainly towed caravans on far worse roads, but conditions may well be more difficult when wet.

The last time I was at Ndumo before May was in August 1978, when the road was dust from Jozini and quite rough, but we did not have a caravan then.

It is in northern KZN, borders on Mozambique and close to Swaziland. It is one of the best birding reserves in South Africa with more than 430 different birds recorded. Game viewing is quite difficult as the bush is very thick but the atmosphere is fantastic - real African jungle.

Hello Willem, the park is just over 300 Km from Badplaas through Swaziland (Quite a lot of dust roads)and 400 Km around the outside of Swaziland via Piet Retief, Pongola and Jozini (Tar except for last 12 Km). I would not try do it as a day trip.
